hi guys gonna buy a fenix LD01 cree q5 for a buddy, chose it because i want him to have something powerful but i know he won't carry anything much bigger

anybody had any problems with it, any reason not to but or is there a better alternative?

thanks dudes:)

Re: fenix LD01

IMHO the Fenix LD01 is a great light and I have not had any problems at all with mine.

As to "better" alternatives, that really depends on your budget and your buddy's needs. For example, I have a Draco that is much smaller than an LD01 (47mm x 13mm vs. 75mm x 14mm for the LD01) and has higher output (estimated 160 lumens on high vs. the LD01's 80 lumens on high) but it also costs significantly more and runs on a rechargeable 10280 Li-Ion battery so that might not work too well for you or your buddy.

Here are some threads discussing some nice, small lights. You can look through them and see if you can find some "better" alternatives:

24/7/365 Waterproof Neck Carry Light
"Nice" lights smaller than Fenix E01?

Re: fenix LD01

I carry an L0D and love it. The stainless steel version would make an excellent gift.

This light really runs best on NiMh rechargeables.

Re: fenix LD01

The "better alternatives" such as Draco, Raw or Aeon are flashaholics lights, and much more expensive than the Fenix.

I own a LD01 Stainless steel with a 10440, and the output is amazing! Works great with nimh or e2 lithium. The SS version makes a perfect gift.

This light can wow people at any time but they just won't believe I paid $50 for a flashlight, like all non-flashaholics :)

Re: fenix LD01

The only negative to mention is that, for some folks, the low is still too bright if you are using it in a very dark place and don't need or want much light. It's often nice to have something dimmer than this light can go. But, you did say, "powerful", so this might not be a factor. A similar sized and slightly higher priced light that does go lower, and maybe a bit higher, is the LiteFlux LF2X.

Re: fenix LD01

LiteFlux LF2X looks sweet but can't find it in the u.k. and don't wanna buy from u.s. atm with the exchange rate as it is

i'm just gonna assume that the ss version of the ld01 is significantly heavier than the aluminium version

Re: fenix LD01

From the spec at 4sevens (without battery).

LD01 SS - 35 grams

LD01 Aluminium - 14.8 grams

Re: fenix LD01

thanks guys the only stats i could find had the same weight for both but obviously that must be wrong, appreciate the info.

hard to justify the extra weight for edc.
as a collection piece for sure

Re: fenix LD01

It's a very fine choice you nor your friend will be dissapointed.
I personally own the SS version which I keep on my keys.

Re: fenix LD01

The main problem I see is that most people might not use the light as much if it is multimode. Runtime is also pretty short on alkaline batteries.

If he doesn't mind multimode and will be using rechargeable or Lithium batteries. Alkalines are fine, but runtime are much shorter then with rechargeable batteries. 10 something minutes to 50%on high for an alkaline battery. That jumps to 40-50 something minutes with a good rechargeable battery.

Re: fenix LD01

Even if you don't like multimodes, it turns on to a nice, usable level. I got one saturday, and bought another on monday. They're great little lights, exactly what I was looking for for a backup/keychain light.

Re: fenix LD01

Small (1aaa or 1aa) powerful lights like the LD01 perform rather badly on alkaline batteries which is what non-flashaholics will tend to use in them. If you give one to someone, better include a pack of eneloops and a charger.

I just got the stainless version, great little pocket light, classier than the aluminum version in my opinion (I had the L0D CE before, very nice light, I went for the stainless mainly as a change of pace). Too heavy for a keychain though.

Re: fenix LD01

I can't tell you about runtimes or whatever on alkalines but I run mine on alkalines and it seems fine. I don't know if it gets brighter on a NiMh battery or lithium.

I bought this light because it looked pretty neat but I really like it. I have found that I clip it to my hat and use it as a reading light. It is so lightweight.

The twisty head piece interface is not something I have ever liked and this is no exception, but it is worth the trade off.

Mine is carried in the elastic side pouch on my Leatherman Charge TTi multitool and I also carry my SF L1

Re: fenix LD01

I have both LD01's, the black aluminium and the stainless steel one:

For me the SS version is too heavy in a pocket so I never carry it. I would advise to get the aluminium one. :)

BTW I got them from a UK vendor.

Re: fenix LD01

i will get the aluminium version and i will get it from the u.k.

thanks for the pic

Re: fenix LD01

There's been a few other threads about the LD01. I remember several posts dealing with a flickering issue and also a greenish tint. I really wanted one until I read so many complaints. You might want to search a little and find some of these older threads, then decide for yourself.

Does anyone know if these are still issues, or maybe the latest batch is better?

If anyone knows a CPF vendor who'll test them for tint before shipping, let me know.

Re: fenix LD01

My wife and I both have an LD01 SS each. Hers lives on her keys (she doesn't seem to mind the extra wieght, but i am thinking of replacing hers with the Al version)

Mine is EDC'd in my pocket and I clip it into my pocket with a fenix lobster claw clip as per HoopleHeads suggestion. Works like a charm and is really secure.

The only thing to be aware of is that the LD01 is not much of a thrower, but is awesome in close quarters say within 5-10m (15 - 30ft)
