In fact, most LED flashlights provide extra output levels by flickering the LED at a faster rate than the human eye can usually detect. When the output is not filtered and smoothed out, the flicker can be seen when the light source, subject, or viewer moves. This flicker is commonly known as "PWM," or "Pulse Width Modulation." 8.5 hours on low using Alkalines?? Other reviews say alkalines are worst than eneloops in the fenix ld01 and eneloops will run on low for about 3h and 45minutes! Perhaps lithium primaries can get close to 8.5 hours, but not alkalines nor eneloops.. the official runtime is impossible to achieve on alkalines, isn' t it?

Yes there is no way it will do 8.5 hours or even come close.

Your have to be careful what power level your are doing runtime on, alkalines works very well at low load (i.e. 8+ hours), but loses much capacity at high load (i.e. below 1 or 2 hours).

eneloop batteries has more constant capacity, independent of load.

I.e. at full power eneloop has the longest runtime, but at low power alkaline has the longest runtime.

Well im going on what was said on the official intro page on the cpf market.. check the link at the bottom, it clearly says alkaline aaa

I did not know that, but unfortunately i' ve never seen runtime tests on alkalines.. this is the only one I found but it ferers to the L0D CE http://flashlightreviews.com/reviews/fenix_l0dce.htm

Is a Fenix LD01 right for me?

First off, I'm not a flashlight fanatic, though I have over a few years spent several hours reading about them, which is several hours more than even the average geek here in Britain.

What I want is a keyring attachable flashlight which runs off a single AAA cell (for cost reasons as they are far cheaper than the button-cell alternatives) but which can provide high output if needed. I currently have a... (hides head in shame) Maglite Solitaire - the sort where you increase the brightness by tapping it against something until it gets brighter, and would like something better for the few occassions I need some easily portable light source unexpectedly.

I've already got the batteries for it, my local supermarket is changing owners soon and they've got a load of reduced price batteries, so I picked up a 2xAAA pack of Energizer Ultimate Lithium for £0.92 (roughly US$1.30). That looks quite good compared with some online prices I've seen (my local store was originally selling them for the crazy price of £3.70 though, just for two AAA!). They've also got quite a lot more at that price, along with AA as well, if I need to stock up.

Would there be much difference between the light output of the LD01 and my Maglite Solitaire (after it has been knocked to maximum brightness)? I would like something brighter and more reliable for the occassions when I need an emergency light. Or alternatively is there some other single AAA powered torch you could recommend which is easily obtainable in the UK and better than it for a similar price.

The fenix would serve you well. It is way brighter, you will be astounded about how much light is coming from that thing.
The low on the fenix will probably be brighter than the solitaire. Once you try it, you can never go back.

You will love LD01. I've kept a Solitaire in my pocket for some 10 years before LED's came and once you try the Fenix you will think that your Solitaire has a dead cell in it.

Compared to a Solitaire you would also be astounded by the Fenix E01, which can be had for around $15. Only one level, but very long running (around 10 hours in regulation). The LD01 will be an absolute screamer on high or medium in comparison, but the runtime suffers and the price is higher. Just depends on what you're looking for in a very pocketable light. Both are good quality and will make you happy. :welcome:

Lol, the LD01 is more comparable to a d cell maglite rather than a solitaire
also, yeah the e01 is great too if you dont want to shell out for the ld01 and is still brighter and just a much better beam.

I really like DX, you can find a pretty good deal most of the times.
Just read some information about LEDs and see users' comments.

All I need to know is (***really personal list***):
1: P7 (too much for me)
2: R2 (mine, I will never change it, I always buy this)
3: Q5 (also good for AA and AAA)
4: P4 (not enough brightness :))

here in the uk a MAG solitaire is around the same price as a fenix eo1 £12-15 i have the fenix L0D not quite as bright as the LD01 but the difference of a candle to a bonfire in comparison to a solitaire get a fenix easy to get in the uk

I would also like to voice my opinion for the Fenix E01 primarily because of its' very long run time. Despite having only single mode and being dimmer than the LD01, it is more than enough for night time in door use and runs considerably longer. Compared to the Solitaire, it seems 10 times brighter and runs indefinitely longer and cost only 15 USD. The only downside is a bit bluish/purpleish tint, but it is easily ignored. Check them out here

I just got the LD01 SS the other day and love it! It's pretty bright and comes with a pocket clip. I don't think you can go wrong with the LD01...You could get a smaller modified light but much more $$$.


You could save money and get the E01..But 10 lumens?? No thanks!

I know exactly what you mean.. I think new technology rules the old stuff. I know someone to this day has a solitaire... tired
