Filter Question

Well basically I just ordered a red filter for my Surefire, I've never used any but decided it was what I needed for keeping a "nightvision". My question is, as the white light comes out of the LED and passes through the red filter, only the red frequencies can go through, so what happens to the rest of the light frequencies?? Do they bounce back in or get absorbed by the filter? If so, do I have to keep this in mind when operating a filtered light source i.e. use it for shorter intervals to avoid overheating the head? Thanks...

They are blocked, and you don't have to worry about additional heating issues.
