Fine thread tap & die set

Lowes carries their Kobalt line. I bought a small set today that was a mix of both, but they had a good assortment of sets available.

also - check MSC Industrial

just a side note - most threading is done with a single point tool on a lathe..

Don't force use-enco.com. I think it is the same company as MSC Direct, but the product selections are different.

Personally I have not had much luck threading with a die. It never seems to start straight.

BTW, a friend of mine recently brought an exhaust manifold to my house so I could drill/tap a hole in it for an exhaust gas temp sensor. He also brought a Kobalt brand 1/8" NPT tap. I drilled the hole and really put a lot of muscle into the tapping with almost zero progress. (Nice looking TiN-coated Kobalt tap, new from the package.)

Out of frustration, I took out the cheapie plain HSS 1/8" NPT tap that I bought from Enco for $1.98. It threaded the manifold as if it were made of hot cheese.

Moral of the story as far as I'm concerned: Buy your metalworking tools from a place that sells metalworking tools, not a hardware store!!

Travers Tool has the sizes for the SureFire E series under the "special" thread catagory.

Snapon.com has the best prices I've seen for individual taps and dies. IIRC their shipping is free and it took like 1 day for them to get stuff to me.

For me, the easiest way to thread with a die is to hold the part in the lathe chuck. Bring the tailstock up to the back side of the die & use the tailstock ram to apply pressure while turning the die to start the thread. Much easier than starting by hand. The thread can be finished under power using a slow back-gear speed.
