I had been considering modifying a light for work as the lights we use are really poor, dim and yellow incandecent output less than a norman MagD. So while i was thinking about the build for my own light which has now turned into a 400 lumen job my mate asked me to make his better so i decided to put a Seoul ssc into it.
The light uses a pr based buld so I built the Led onto the end of a Aluminium rod matching the diameter of the pr base. Mbirds came up with this idea in his modded fulton post. I used a seoul ssc from dx $5.80 and one of the 3v drivers that give 700ma(seen on Crenshaws mod) they work out about $2 each.

I cut grooves into the rod for the wires and arctic alumina'd the led onto the tip of the rod. I shaped a washer to fit to hold the bulb aginst the reflector like the shape of a pr base

Then I cut it off the rod

Then I soldered on the board and put it in light and focused and centered it, bit fiddly.

Done! Quite pleased with the outcome, this one's zoomed in slightly

I'll post the mod of my own light once I get the 6AA-2D adapter I need to run it, I cant wait.

Thanks to everyone on here for your threads, Im addicted now:sssh:

Great job Rob! What do you estimate the brightness to be? How is the heat? I'm going to do pretty much the same on my plastic fulton v.2 but try to squeeze in more metal on the opposite end of the rod.

Did some beamshots next to l2d ce on high and turbo
rotten night outside to do beanshots but I'll get some soon, its got better throw than l2d.
Brighter then l2d on high, ssc mod top

against l2d on turbo, brighter hotspot than l2d

I'll leave it upto you what you think it is in output but im very pleased, I'll need to get a lightmeter.Would actually have been better side by side as the ssc mod is further from wall at the angle. I did what crenshaw did with the rolled foil inside the head.

Very nice Rob! The beam from your mod light is much better focused compared to the L2D too. What does your mod light run on, looks like 2D? Which board SKU did you use?

I'm thinking of modding a plastic 2D light with a CREE and aspheric lens, however there does not seem to be much 2 NiMH board available from DX.

:thanks:

Hi Wechnevag thanks, I took a wee while to fiddle to focus it and its got a great throw only thing is I have to give it to my mate at work:(
Its a 2D light but im running it on 2AA's with adaptors just to test it, these are the drivers I used they are cheap as chips
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4382 but only 700ma output

I've got the light im doing for myself its got three cree's in it and is gonna run on 6aa:grin2: you might be better going down that road with a battery adapter but I see in your thread you've thought about that, also depending on your light and the spring maybe you could cut it back and fit 3 c's into it and go direct drive or add a small resistor.
