Hey guys I shall be getting a Mcgizmo PD-S dark gray/slate HA III, with SS trit bezel. I am to cheap to buy one so I traded for it!
This will be my first Mcgizmo so what should I expect? Will I become addicted(I think so). If anyone has any pictures to hold me over until I receive mine that would be great! Thanks guys.

I don't have one either yet, but am curious to see yours once you get it. Post pictures, and let us know your thoughts.

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

Don't expect anything and you will be suitably pleased! This comes straight from Don's words and is good advice because I didn't expect anything and I was extremely pleased.

However, the PD-S is my favorite light, and it may be a little underwhelming at first depending on what you are used to but it really grows on you. Just clip it to your pocket and use it like you would any other flashlight and it'll dawn on you how well-designed it is. Now that I've gone McLux I will never go back!

My experience has been that you will either like mcgizmo's enough to get more (if you can afford it) or you won't care for them and you'll sell it and move on.

My guess is that you will like them enough to be a fan for life. However, a word of warning: Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. Don's lights are among the best ever made. They are easy to get hooked on. If you can't afford them, don't get hooked.

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

It's also one of my favorite lights.

I agree, don't expect much and you will be very happy!

Now start saving for a Titanium PD-S! :broke:

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

Thats what I am trying to do.... I am trying not to read much about them. I want it to be a big surprise. I am always looking at pictures of these things and say "wow, if only I had some spare cash"

When received I will surely take pictures and probably be a member for life ;)

"First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!"

Cosmo, you can expect to change your avatar. Welcome to the club.

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

I totally agree with carrot. At first you may not see the appeal but after using it you will really start to appreciate it. My PD-S is still my favourite light even though it is not the latest and greatest. The piston design makes operation very intuitive. Push the piston for low and push harder for high or twist for low and twist further for high. Very simple and reliable and for me it is still the best looking flashlight as well. When you get it try to reserve judgement until you have had a chance to use it. I only have three McGizmos but I wish I could afford more.

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

Thanks for the responses guys. Another thing that I like about the Mcgizmo(in general) is that they are not mass produced. I love having things that are say 1 out of 100 and so on. Also this will be my first custom light and I like to have things on my desk and people ask "Hey whats that" and I can proceed to tell them that its not your run of the mill light, knife and so on.

:twothumbs Yes, exclusive ownership.

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

To expand on what I said earlier, I feel that the pre-Lunasol McGizmos are a little bit underwhelming and perhaps even disappointing to the excited buyer, especially the aluminum ones, but if you give them a chance they will grow on you and you'll never want to let them go! I am not sure why I was disappointed but I guess it was because everyone treated them as the holy grail and it was more like a "so what?" experience. But in reality the light is as perfect as it gets for me because it makes all of the right compromises (and every product makes compromises).

Now that that's out of the way I have 4 McGizmos and I have no plan on stopping!

There are plenty of times where I buy something(not just a light) and say heh... What did I just spend my money on... I usually keep it to the side and revisit it another time. 95% of the time I ask myself what did I not like about this product.

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

I have nine of Don's lights, all Ti except for an aluminum Aleph III. Others here are saying not to expect much and you won't be disdappointed. But maybe that needs a little clarification.

Don's lights seem to lack the "gee whiz" factor because their elegance lies in their simplicity (of operation - not of design) and drop dead ruggedness. They just do what they're supposed to do without fan fare, bells or whistles. Reasonable run times, adequate task-oriented light output, and maximum reliability. That's is what you get with Don's lights. To me, that's pretty exciting.

Although our numbers are growing, how many other people do you know that have a reliable flashlight at all much less on their person when they need it? I have found that you can improvise a lot of things but you can't improvise light in darkness.

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

you can expect to see this when you look in the mirror:

pd-s on my platforms is considered one of Don's best works. It is a classic and from what I have seen, one of his most popular lights :D. You can expect to enjoy utility and entertainment from it for many years

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

I totally agree with what's been said.

My first McGizmo was a McLuxIII-PD (HA-III with a luxeon-III). After so much anticipation I almost got disappointed when I finally saw it first. Yes, it was "just" a flashlight. What was I expecting I don't know . It was a matter of days before this little gem grew on me, so much that I've had several McGizmos since.

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

What is going to happen is that you are going to get spoiled by McGizmo's, and won't want any other lights!!

Re: First McGizmo. What to expect?!?!

Expect to like your other lights just a little bit less.

Congrats on THE discovery!! :twothumbs

I personally like the aluminum ones (HA) - my first one was a aluminum EN mule - after seeing a picture of one and asking "what's that" - that was the start of the slide down the slippery slope.

The aluminum mule has been replaced with a Ti mule with the LED from the sundrop. The two HA aluminum ones are a PD-S and a 27LT-S (with 3 trits around the side). Having a AOTH (art of the hide) holester for them absolutely completes them for me. I EDC the aluminum PD-S in the AOTH holester.

I love the feel of the titanium - if that makes sense - but prefer carrying the aluminum one. Now that I have the AORTH holester that doesn't have the clip - it has the belt loop I think I can start carrying the Ti PD-S (or Lunasol 20)
