I am considering a Quark 123 for back-up use, but I am concerned about the pocket clip durability. I am very hard on pocket clips and have snapped a half a dozen of them over the past couple years. How durable is the Quark clip? The website says the clip cannot be removed because of the light's small size. What happens if the clip snaps? Do you have to replace the entire head of the light?

Thanks for your insight,

Hi Amicus,

Since I just so happened to be trying to decide on the 123 tactical or non-tactical and I ran across your new thread, I figured I would pass along links for both the tactical and non-tactical clip-less versions which give you other options to consider. Here are the links:

Non-tactical = http://goinggear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14_43&products_id=2170.

Tactical = http://goinggear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14_43&products_id=2169.

I hope this helps!

If you go to Darvis's 4Sevens Lithium Primary moonlight mode runtime thread which is still here on the first page on LED lights, and go to page 5, post 128, I have a picture of my no-clip 1x123 with a Mac's custom clip installed. Since then, I have put a McGizmo Ti clip on there. These are available at The Sandwich Shoppe, $20-25 IIRC Expensive, but arguably the strongest clip out there, and many here trust them completely. I have the proper drillbit and threading tap, if you wish to go this route, I'll happily install your clip for free. :D The 1x123 is so light, it doesen't even move with this clip installed. Standing offer for the rest of you CPF'ers as well...

I don't really use clips myself, but the quark clips seem very durable to me.

I do, however, advise against the Quark 123 with a clip since, due to the light's size, the clip falls right on the threads when removing the tailcap and make for a hard time when re-installing the taicap. If you think you can go around this problem by removing the head instead, I don't think it really makes things much easier, because the clip presses fairly hard on the body.

Just my 2 cents

Scout,
What size drill and tap are you using?
Thanks & regards,

Seahunt- #43 drill bit and a 4-40 tap. :) Don's clip and Mac's use the same sized and spaced holes, and the same screws. I avoid the battery change issue by pinching the clip up and away from the light body and removing the head to swap cells. If you use one of the existing holes next to the factory slot on the tailcap for one screw, you only have to drill one more. VERY secure carry. I removed the switch and boot before using the drill press for the hole. I'll take another pic or two tomorrow and post them. Install takes all of 10 minutes.

I'll chirp in. I just bought the 123x2 and the clip is amazing. Very tight, solid, and strong. I've handled the E1B before and this one seems stronger.

Quark clips are strong. Carry my Q123^2 in pocket for EDC. It may be getting a little looser after so long (I got one of the first available when Quark was new) but you can get a new one from 4Sevens cheap.

I gotta say, though. That custom clip looks SWEET! Especially because the Q123 is only available with a bevel up clip.

I like the QAA for back up. Not much longer than Q123, AA is plentiful, and a 14500 is just as bright but with a bit more capacity than a 123.
