g2 drop-in throw?

I go the itch for a new flashlight. I think I have decided on a surefire g2, with a drop in. My main concern is throw. I am hoping this light will throw similar to a d-mini or mrv.

Will I be able to get that good of performance with a DX drop-in? Or would I have to spend the money on something like this? http://www.bugoutgearusa.com/crq5drmo.html

Also, will 2 rcr123a batteries fit in a g2?

The rcr batteries I have fit in the G2.

I plan on using a 17670 in mine with the dealxtreame module.

To get that kind of throw I think it will take the BOG Q5 module. The DX and Kai's use older Cree LEDs and a textured reflector.

Why is throw important to you?

Throw is usually a function of reflector size - the larger the reflector, the better the throw. Stippled reflectors like that of the G2 do not tend to throw as well as smooth ones.

Mostly just the novelty of it. When I need floody light I use a headlamp.

I currently have a jetbeam cle. I like the light, but I want a clicky and being I am upgrading, something more powerfull would be nice. The cle puts out a decent amount of light, but I think there must be something significantly brighter if I move up to 2xaa or lithium cells?

I don't think you'll see a G2 throwing like a Tiablo because you can't get a large enough reflector in there. I have the Malkoff drop-in with OP, Cree Q2, and it's good for about 400 feet. A Tiablo will get you out to 800 or better. The new Dereelight even farther, although they start starting to throw so far you need binoculars or a spotting scope to see what you're lighting up. :)

Malkoff M60 in a Surefire G2:

Distance to target is about 600 feet. Same exposure for both shots.

My budget for this light was around 50 dollars. Which would rule out the dereelight (which looks great btw) and some of the more expensive drop-ins.

I am going to look into some dx lights like the cree projection and ultrafire c2.

Also, what kind of incandescent would throw like a dereelight or mrv?

You might want to look at the voltage specs for the drop-in's. The bug Q5 wants 4.5-9.0 is your 17670 cell able to deliver? Or will you have the best and brightest drop-in giving out diminished output?

I really like the looks of the ultrafire c2. Does anyone know how much current it draws?

I am thinking I might hold off a little longer untill a DX light comes equipped with a q5.

I just seen somewhere that the current on a c2 is 950mA. Can anyone confirm that?

If it actually is that high, I think it would be a good candidate for a q5 upgrade. I could get the c2, q5, 2x 18650, and a charger all within budget. I think that would be a very significant upgrade in throw from my cle.

Anyone know if this has been done yet?

If you're looking for bang for buck/throw why not consider an incan mod? There are many inexpensive mag mods that will easily put out over 1000 bulb lumens.

On another note: be careful with off-brand 18650 cells (especially ultrafire), as they have been known to explode, burn and otherwise fail. I hope you already know this. It is really worth spending the money on quality cells - LG, Pila and AW.

The light may be used for backpacking every once and a while, so reliability and size are important. I would consider a minimag hotwire mod, but 2x lithium cells and short runtime bothers me a bit.

How tight would a minimag/cree mod focus?

According to this review, the WF-600 has about the same throw as the Lumapower MRV. With cheaper batteries and charger, the set costs $45. Runtime is about 2.5 hours to 50% on high.

For something narrower, the WF-400 is also a pretty good thrower.

As of right now, I haven't seen a single report of a 18650 exploding under normal uses, not even from the cheap brands like Ultrafire.

A minimag Cree mod will have even less throw then the Malkoffdevices drop-in.

Check out supertactical.com, they have a Q4 drop in that kicks some serious butt. It's putting out 80-100 Lumens on a 75% 18650 right now and I have yet to try it with my new rcr123s...supposedly it's 200 lumens, light-reviews.com just reviewed it.

Good luck,
Phil
