Ok I have a semi-stupid question... I have some AA Nimh batts that I want to use in a battery pack, but the tops need to be flat (there isn't enough room).

Anyone happen to know if the button tops are solid, i.e. can be ground down, or are hollow?

Check out some of the battery web sites. For example cheapbatterypacks.com , batterystation.com or batteryspace.com Do a search in goggle for the battery type you want to use using "flat top, or tabbed cells or batteries in the search. There are several sites that will even build packs for you, and LuxLuther, one of our own CPF'er, builds packs.

Ok thanks guys, that's what I needed to know. Basically I was trying to rebuild a cordless phone battery pack. I already re-built one use tabbed cells, just wanted to see if I could get by with grinding this down, looks like not

Cordless phone battery plugs

I also want to rebuild my cordless phone battery using off-the-shelf AAA cells, but I don't want to cannibalize the old one for the little plug as the old one still works and I want to keep it as backup.

Does anyone have a source for various kinds of the miniature plugs used, e.g. for a Uniden phone? A pre-wired one would be best.

I've tried places like Digi-Key, but if they have it my search skills are not up to finding it.

I've looked and not found my particular size of replacement battery in shops for some reason. It always seems to be out of stock.

Battery recycling bucket at work had what I needed. Found a couple of old Panasonic style after keeping my eye out for a while. If I were more ambitious, I could have stopped by the main recycling center for my town, which has a huge bin for batteries. Just be carefull of all the leakage that will be in there from burst alkaline and carbon batteries!
