I recently purchased (among other things) a Luxeon III star (LXHL-LR3C). I'm planning to run it at about 700mA, and was wondering if a 3"x 3"x 2" finned heat sink will be suitable for operation. I'm unsure if it will be overkill or not. I plan on putting it into an enclosure, so this may have an effect as well.

Should be way more than adaquate! Would depend on how long you plan to run it and airflow through the sink within your enclosure. Build it, instrument it, and find out! (That's a bunch of heatsink, guy, and I doubt you'll have problems if you use good thermal compound/epoxy at the minimum thickness you can get.) Larry

Ok, that's what I figured. I know it's a bit overkill, but it's what I have on hand. I'm mounting a Fraen narrow beam lens on it, so I'm most likely going to use it for general illumination, as well as for fun. Making things fluoresce from a distance is a pretty awesome effect.
