High CRI Nichias for D.I.Y.

Hi guys,

Some of you have expressed an interest in experimenting and playing with the Nichia 083 High CRI LED's. I don't think Nichia has ever been available through the typical electronics distribution network and it's difficult to get the components as a result.

I have a good number of these mounted on the custom MCPCB and I am game to let some go in minimums of 10 pieces.

In the image below, you can see the Nichia 083 High CRI LED mounted on the MCPCB:

The MCPCB is sitting on the top of a can that has 4 columns coming up into the notches of the MCPCB.

The MCPCB is .750" in diameter and 1/16" thick. The notches are roughly 1/8" diameter on .750" centers and the MCPCB can be clamped similar to the starboards if you wish. If you want the LED to share a common ground, you can use a small screw through the little hole and the screw head will pick up contact with the (-) lead of the LED by virtue of a tinned circle of trace around the hole that is common to the LED (-). In some of my builds, I have to break the trace connection here as I use that hole but don't want the LED to be grounded.

I don't have the time or interest in getting into the component supply side but I have plenty of these and some of you want them.

What my offer is is a minimum of 10 pieces of these LED's on MCPCB for $15 ea. plus shipping. If you guys want to divvy these up further, be my guest but leave me out of the equation, please.

If you would like some of these, please send me an E-mail with the quantity you want mailed to you and your CPF name and mailing address. In the subject line, please put N pieces of 083 on MCPCB. (where N is the number of mounted LED's you want and N is greater than or equal to 10).

I think this should work but if there is any glitch or it becomes problematic, I will let you know here and close down the offer.

I would ask that you consider sharing here on CPF what you have done with these and your take on the results. This offer is not an invitation for private communications asking for ideas and such on what to do with the LED's and how to go about doing it. Any discussions like this should be here on the forum where we all can elect to participate, or not.

There has also been some intereat expressed in the 083-D can and contact PCB I am using in the light engines. I am not ready yet to consider whether I want to let some of these out for D.I.Y. or not.

Does that mean for $150/10, we would get the Nichia 083 mounted on the MCPCB (but not including the machined mounting fixture)? That's a killer deal ... thanks for making this available:goodjob:
 
Yes,
You get the LED that has been machined mounted on the metal core PCB. For the old timers, think of these as similar to the Luxeon stars. These are $15 ea. and a minimum order of 10 of them ($150 + shipping)

The Cree MCPCB is .650" in diameter and 2 mm thick (.078") VS the 1/16" (.063") of the 083 MCPCB.

Is it just me or does that sound like something you'd find in a buried pirates chest? At least if you mumble the three a bit. (and I'm assuming the zero is silent.)

Not entirely unfitting considering how hard these seem to be to find.




or maybe it's just late and I've been staring at the computer screen for far too long for one day...
 
I'm trying to understand, can I simply plop one of these into my Aleph McMule LE? Edit: Hmm, I'd have to transplant the white disc with the emitter on it? Thanks.

I have a feeling that you would too if you had bought. What was it? 1400 pieces.
While I am glad that Don is making these available. I would not expect Don so sit on a huge stock of these emitters, or any letters for that matter. I am sure they represent a significant investment.

BTW, what's the Min and Max Input Voltage for the Nichia 083? Is there a link to the white paper specs on Nichia's site somewhere? I think it was posted here before, haven't been able to find it again.

I tried to cut out the two pages of 14 from the PDF that give the specs you might need but the file is protected from such. I am not going to host the whole document on my web site.

Most important, max current is 350 mA. Typical Vf is 3.8 V @ 300 mA.

The LED's I got are:
d2 color, P14 flux, M Vf

For those who want the numbers:

flux: 51.0 to 60.5 lumens at 300 mA
Vf: 3.6V to 4.0V at 300 mA

efficiency: 42.5 lm/W worst case, 56.0 lm/W best case (not bad at all considering the high color rendering)

I also see some other interesting parts on the Nichia site which will hopefully be available this year:

NS6L083B-H1 (similar to the part used in the Sundrop but with 60 lm typical flux instead of 52, and 3.3V typical Vf instead of 3.8V)

NS6W083B-H1 (looks like a high-CRI 5000K version with 70 lm typical flux and 3.3V typical Vf)

The latter part might be just the ticket for those of us looking for a high CCT, high CRI LED. Efficiency doesn't look bad, either. Going by the typical numbers it would be ~70 lm/W.

NS6W083B-standard cool white, 100 lm and 3.3V at 300 mA, or 100 lm/W!

It looks like about a 30% flux penalty then for higher color rendering. Not bad in my book.

In the Sundrop (or any other custom mod you install it in) the light quality is hard to describe ... I'll gladly sacrifice a few lumens for light that is so useful.
