How does one research a charity?

I've decided I want to sponsor a child living in less fortunate circumstances. Now I imagine there are several organizations that do that, how does one research them? My friend suggests www.compassion.com as that is the one he uses but how do you research it besides what they say on their own web page to make sure they are legit and most of your money is truly going to help the child?

A family friend was stationed in Korea and saw one of those orphanages that gets a lot of charity money. Unfortunately the money mostly went to the guy running the place and the children didn't get much of it. I'd recommend finding a charity closer to home you can interact with.
