Basically, my dad asked me to ask you guys here on how to disable the daytime running lights on our Vibe. As he put it," ;he is] tired of being stared at while he lets the car idle while waiting to pick me up from Scouts, etc."
So I'm asking the knowledgeable people on this forum for help. Does anybody know if there is a fuse that could be removed to shut them off, or could he put in a switch, so he can turn them on and off at night.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Cars without daytime running lights look older now..

I know that with older Lexus models (that don't have the "DRL Off" feature on the light selector), the DRLs don't actually come on until the car is put into gear - that means you can just turn the car off or restart it, and the DRLs will remain off until you get going.

Im a big fan of the DRL so I wouldnt disable them as they add more presence and safety to a vehicle and in fact they are becoming more and more mandatory in parts of the country and throughout the world (England, I think?). But as for shutting them off at a stop, such as when he comes to pick you up, just put the vehicle in park or neutral and they should shut off until put back into a gear.

Otherwise, and I cant remember for sure, turn the automatic light switch to the off position (to the left, I believe) during the day and turn it back on at night. This defeats the purpose of the "automatic" function but at least you can turn it off. And again, I'm not 100% sure if thats how to turn them off on the newer GM vehicles. My GMC truck has a dome override button that if pressed 3 times quickly, it shuts off the automatic function and the DRL.

You may not realize it but the DRL does help increase your visibility to other drivers.

You don't have rocks at scouts?

That aside, DRLs make it safer for everyone in your vehicle and everyone in every vehicle around you.

since it's while parked, try putting the parking brake on , some vehicles it works. others you have to shut it off and restart it with the parking brake on.and it stays off as long as the brake is on.

We both understand the safety reasons behind the DRL's. However, my dad is really tired of them reflecting off of the car in front of him, when he's parked. If there were a way to wire in a switch for them, that would be great. My dad used to be a mechanic, and he's really good at wiring, but he just wanted to know if any one else had figured out how to do it.
As for the other suggestions, it's a manual (FTW), and even putting it in neutral, and putting the parking brake on doesn't help. But thanks for the suggestions, though.

I'll add yet another $15 to my standing wager that there will never, ever be a "How do I disable my DRLs?" thread on this board that doesn't generate a bunch of not-very-knowledgeable preaching about DRLs' safety benefit and resultant back-and-forth squabbling without the original poster's question ever actually getting answered. ¬_¬

J. Galt: The info you need should be easy to find over here. The first-generation Vibe was 2003-2008, so the "2003" info at that site should apply. If you or your dad wants a good factual discussion on the safety benefits/drawbacks and relative merits of various types of DRL, without preaching for or against, send an email to Dan Stern and ask for his DRL document. I don't see it on the web anywhere, and I haven't asked whether I can pass it along.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the link! I found a good link to put in a switch.
I also wanted to clarify, my dad just wanted to be able to turn ooff the DRL's, when he was sitting still. And let them work while he was driving. Thank you all for your quick responses!
