Friday last, I went with a few fellow flashoholics to take a look around at Target and when we were done, my friend wanted to stop in at the Petsmart next door. While he was asking a young girl a question, I noticed a little Black Capped Conure and asked the girl about it. She just began gushing about the bird and excitedly explaining how he was just the sweetest, mellowest bird she or anyone at the store had ever seen. She took him out and placed him on my finger. She was absolutely right. The little guy was a wonder to behold. I never saw a bird so friendly and sweet.

My wifes birthday was coming up and the day before, I tried to get her a new Dyson vacuum cleaner, and she refused it saying it was "too" expensive. My wife and I are animal lovers supreme and when I saw this little bird, I fell in love immediately and told the girl "I'll Take It"

The store actually closed and it took another 20 minutes to finalize the transaction, so it was almost 9:30 PM when I left the store. I got home around quarter to 10 and my wifes reaction was fantastic. I set up his cage and after a little time with my wife, we put the little guy to bed.

The next day, Saturday, he was up and waiting eagerly for us and I took him out of the cage and let him spend some time sitting on my finger and my wifes before putting him back in his cage. The rest of the day went well and we even went back to the store and purchased some more food and accessories before going to dinner and then home. "Pepe" was fine and we covered him and went to bed.

Sunday dawned with him seeming a bit tired and listless. He was still very eager to sit on my finger and cuddle. He was not very willing to go back in his cage. Every time I tried to put him back inside on one of the perches, he would turn around real quick and get back on my hand. After he was back in the cage, I noticed that every time I walked past the room he would come to the front of the cage like he wanted me to pick him up. He just seemed so tired and was getting listless. I figured the excitement had left him tired and I covered him and every hour or so, I would look in and he would be for all appearances sleeping comfortably with his head under his wing a little.

I went out for about an hour around 8pm and when I got back at 9 oclock, I asked my wife how Pepe was doing and she said she had just checked him about 20 minutes ago and he was fine. I peeked in and to my surprise, he was laying on the floor of the cage on his stomach with his wings slightly outstretched. I opened the cage and tried to rouse him, and it became apparent he was in serious distress. I picked him up and he lay on my hand on his back and looked up at me and made a few noises. I called our Vets emergency line and they advised that they did not have an emergency Avian doctor. They referred us to a Doctor that was some 35 miles away and I called them and after a brief conversation we left with Pepe wrapped in a small towel and in the box he came in. We made it about 2 miles from home when he gave a loud screech from inside his box. I pulled over and opened his box and he had died.

The store I got him at, gave no indication of how or why he died so quickly on the second day when the first night and the next day he seemed perfectly fine and did not seem stressed at all. We have a Cockatiel that has been with us for 18 years, so we have a little exposure to birds. They said they were going to do a Necropsy and would let us know if there were any serious findings. I have my doubts.

I cannot stress how gut wrenching this whole thing has been. Sunday night I never went to sleep. I felt like my guts had been ripped out of me. My wife just cried all night. We just put down one of our Dogs 2 months ago, that we had for 13 years. She had cancer. A Possum that was living under our neighbors deck for two years since he was a baby that we were feeding, got hit by a car right in front of our house Wednesday night the 4th.

Please forgive my longish rant. I just needed to vent.

sorry about your loss

but

Necropsy dont you mean Autopsy ?.

Ive never heard of a bird having an autopsy.
Yikes the store doing an autopsy , i thought it was ment to be done by a vetenarian not a store personnel.

An autopsy is only for humans. When one is performed on an animal, it is called a necropsy. Same thing, different names.

Dawg,
So sad! I knew from the subject where the story was leading. The precious moments though that you had with the bird are not diminished in the least with its passing. If anything, they are more precious. I am so glad that this bird spent his last days with you and your wife and not in the pet store!! May the weight of your loss be testament to the power of the bonds you can experience and share with others.

Sorry about your loss, I am not an animal lover myself but obviously this animal meant something to you. I hope you find another.

Thanks, for the sympathies.

Yes, what Marduke said about the Necropsy.

I believe these stores contract with local Vets for the wellness care of the animals they retail. I did not mean to lead anyone to believe that the stor personnel would actually do it.

Thanks McGizmo. I told my wife after it happened, that in all likelihood, had it not been with us it would have died alone in a closed store only to be discovered the next day. I would like to think my maker had a hand in our interaction with Pepe. I know that the bond, though short, was a strong one.

My wife is in the self blame stage at the moment and she feels that somehow we contributed to the birds demise. I know from research after the fact, that Conures are expert at concealing their illness' to obviate being targeted by predators in the wild. In most cases they will not show any signs of illness till it is almost too late to intervene. Still though, not much consolation for having to witness and experience the sadness of the untimely passing of one of Gods little beauties. He was only just born on 4/14/07.

Sorry to hear about your loss! I have a 13 year old green cheeked conure who has been a good friend...

Find another conure to rescue from a pet store and get him to a vet to get a full exam before letting him settle in the new home!

don't give up!

So sorry for your loss. Stories like this just break my heart. I have had a Senegal parrot for 14 years and an African Grey Congo for 8 years. Both were purchased from reputable breeders who care about the health of their birds. Over on the Parrotalk boards it's pretty much agreed that PetSmart one of the worst withregard to bird health.

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your little guy. Rest assured he now flies free over the Rainbow Bridge.

P.S. You sound like you know a bit about parrots. Are you aware of all the household toxins that are lethal to them? Should you get another one, please read up on the dangers of Teflon fumes, furniture treatments, etc.

Were I to lose either of my fids it would kill me. :(

HANG IN THERE!! These things can be so hard!!

You did all you can and for that be proud! The poor lil' fella woulda been worst off with a non-caring owner

Hang in there!!!

poor little guy, my condolences.

by all means let's find ut what the cause was.

in hindsight the petshop's comments about the bird's exceptional tameness and affection become suspicious; perhaps Pepe was already feeling the effect of what he ultimately would succumb to.. maybe his heart..?

please keep us posted.

Condolences to you and your wife. It's sad to lose an animal at ant time, but at the very start is a heartbreak. I had something similar happen to me many years ago. I remember thinking what I could have done wrong, even knowing I did nothing. Just a natural reaction, I guess. Hang in there Dawg!

Many people won't understand the depth of your loss. It appears a lot of us here do.

One of the worst parts of living with animals (I really don't consider our dogs as "owned") is that, in all probability, they will die before you.

Our best wishes to you all.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I know how painful it can be. My 15 year old lovebird died a while ago but what made it hurt much more was the fact that he bonded with me. He was my constant companion. The fact that Pepe was a good natured bird and took to you right away, of course, makes it much more heartbreaking.

I also have 3 Cockatiels, 1 Parakeet, and 2 finches. These birds are more independent. They were all my niece and nephew's animals. I have become caregiver for pets they no longer can care for.

Sorry for your loss, my condolences,
I have had different birds my whole life and currently have a green cheek conure similar to the one you had along with cockatiels. I have gone through that too several times with my birds, and it's never easy, one day they are perfectly fine and then before you know it, they die. As another member said, birds are excellent at hiding illnesses. They are also extremely susceptible to any airborne contaminants even things like air fresheners, but many times they have health issues we never know about until it's too late. I'm sorry for your loss though, may the wonderful memories of your friend live on.

First, let me say thanks to all that have posted their condolances.

BIGIRON, you hit it buddy. That is exactly why I posted this here. I knew that my fellow flashaholics are compassionate people. I wish CPF could run the world.

Dawg, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm an animal lover also and your story touched me. How sweet that you and your wife were able to be there for him and to show him that he was loved during his short life.

Animals are a gift. Pepe sounds like he was a real sweetheart.
