I Still Like My Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA Luxeon

I was just going through my boat bag and pulled out my ole 4AA PP Lux and took it for a spin in the back yard and lit up some tall trees and neighbors' homes. I forgot how nice of a light it is. It's a real thrower, has a decent run-time and feels good in the hand.

I bought it to use to shine the bank and look for logs when coming in at night in my boat when I went night fishing, which I have not done in a long while.

I was just wondering, are there any new lights on the market that can compare to the PP Lux performance, low cost and dependability?

Yeah, this is still a fantastic light. When showing some of my lights to non-flashaholics I hesitate to tell them I paid north of $50 for them lest they think I'm crazy [or find out I'm crazy]. The ProPoly 4aa lux saves me that embarassment: $25 is still in the "reasonable range" for most non-flashaholics. Made in the USA doesn't hurt either.

I doubt it - some may offer the performance, but would lack in the dependability [& that's dependability backed by a GREAT warranty]. Any with both those attributes would cost more.

I'll probably dream about ProPolymer 4AA Q5 tonight.
Yes! It seemed to take PrincetonTec a. L O N G time to put a more updated emitter in their Apex headlamp, but they finally did. I wish Streamlight would update the 4AA.

I don't think there are any lights that are as old as the PP and as inexpensive, that still are unsurpassed in what they do.

Yup. Still a great light.

I keep looking for a light with a modern emitter than can match it for price and runtime, but I haven't had any luck yet.

Streamlight & Maglite are very slow to adapt to new LED technology. With regard to mainstream manufacturers, the 2 that come to mind that use new LED technology quickly are Pelican & Inova.

I'm a fan of 4AA lights and have a SL PP 4AA with a burned out incan which is too expensive to replace. Anybody know if the LED assembly will drop in?

I haven't seen any on BST; I guess it's too "old tech."

Pelican? I can only think of 2 lights of theirs that use a Cree. Streamlight alread is using new leds, they call them C4 and they're using both Crees and TFFC K2s. The K2 would go nice in the PP.

I'm kinda thinking that there is a little difference in the body or head between the incan/7 led vs. the luxeon model. Having said that, you can probably drop in the 7 led module (IMO- not worth the effort). http://www.fox-intl.com/item.asp?id=627

If you're after the luxeon, for the price of the module, you might as well buy the whole light. I still love this light! I've got one that rides next to me in my pick-up truck, and 4 more at home still in unopened packages. The polymer body doesn't freeze my hand in the winter, best feeling clickie switch of all time, perfect power regulation, 4 hours on 4AA means it costs practically nothing to operate, beautiful beam, surprising throw for a light rated at only 40 lumens. I've got lights rated at 100+ lumens, I take them out at night and compare them to the propoly and think, "you've got to be kidding me." I've said this recently, the 4AA propoly luxeon is like a 130 lb boxer fighting for the heavyweight championship.

Stop dreaming... why not pick up a Lowes Taskforce 2C for $29.95 and get approx 150 lumens. Bet you like it! I also think the Propoly Lux 1 4AA is a great light, still available and destined to be a classic.

I remember a few years ago someone took the time to list and count the top lights that CPFers posted in a thread that they liked the most. The SL PP 4AA Lux was either at the top of the list or near the top. That list caused me to purchase one. I wish someone would do a new list to see what lights are the most popular today by CPFers.

Does anyone have a link to the old top light list? I believe that ARC and Photon were way up at the top of that old list.:)

I've an older, but still bright version of the Taskforce and I like the 2C form also. Still, the shape of the PP 4AA is "just right" and I like the temperature insulation properties of a plastic body.

I'm thinking that would be a pretty long list with so many nice lights out during the last 2 years. :D

IIRC, the bezel on the Lux LED is a lot taller than the 7-LED or incand. models, so I doubt it fits. I have 2 Lux models upgraded to Seoul P4 (difficult but worthwhile upgrade), but my 7 LED went MIA when my car was stolen, and I never had an incand.

+ 1 on this great ( old ) flashlight !

Recently, my father ( age 80 ) has joined me on a few of my "after dark" walks.

We live in a very Rural area; middle of nowhere. :candle:

When i considered which of my flashlights to supply him,

this was at the top of my list. Wanted something SIMPLE to operate.

Just ON or OFF. No multi-modes. No focusing. No blinking.

And he really appreciates the plastic body during sub-freezing temps !

Throws very nicely. Especially considering it's "only" 40 Lumens.

I use Eneloops, so the "inefficient Luxeon factor" doesn't bother me.

Oh, and it's easy to Grip and Operate, even while wearing Mittens !

Just wish Streamlight would update 'em.

My friend still uses the one I got him to buy to this day. Saved his behind in a fire and helped in recovering his possesions

Streamlight hear our wishes:

Put a Q3 CREE in the SL PP 4AA at around 700mah.

I might have to sell all my 18650 stuff then.(no prob)

A piercingly bright 3hr regulated 4AA CREE...nice.

Actually I'd rather see them put in a good K2 with good tint, it'd be a more simple change without needing to change the reflector to suit a Cree.
