I want a Titanium light!

Hey guys!

I graduated from college and got a great new job, and now I sort of feel like rewarding myself with a new flashlight!

I know some things have changed since I last looked, there is a new Cree emitter (XP-G I believe) and there are lots of new lights.

What I really would like now is to get a titanium flashlight, to be my new EDC.

I currently have a Jetbeam C-LE v2 which has been a wonderful pocket carry flashlight.

I would like something titanium to replace it, and I would like it to be brighter and better in some way to justify the expense!

Any suggestions for a really good, really convenient pocket-carry titanium light with the latest and brightest emitter?

Also, I am torn between a 1xAA light or a 1xcr123 light for pocket carrying! I know cr123 lights are brighter and have other advantages, but... I can't even tell you how many times with my Jetbeam I have been thankful that it runs on AA batteries, because I can always find them! So I'm torn between the convenience of AA and the superior performance of cr123!

Your thoughts?

Look for something that can use LiIon and AA batteries, then you can have the extra brightness from LiIon, but can use ordinary AA as backup.

One possibility is the Volere AA, some other are Quark AA Ti (If you can find one) or DST TLR.

They are all included in this picture:

Unfortunately it's not titanium but your quandary over AA vs CR123 and the fact that you have already used and liked jetbeams in the past makes me think that you might like teh jetbeam rrt-0

There are not many 1xAA titanium lights out there...

There's the Volere AA from Kuku427, but I don't know if it's sold out or not. Then there's of course the very, very great D10 from JHanko, to get one you must either be lucky or know someone! ;)

The greatest EDC in my eyes is the Haiku XP-G (McGizmo...). That one's available, it's bright, it has the smoothest beam, it has the latest emitter, it looks great and is rugged. You get it in "normal" machined finish or in bead blasted, in "normal" cool white or in neutral white (Don calls it "warm tint"). There's a 2xAA body for it, but it doesn't run on a single AA (but on li-ion).

My unconditionnal vote goes to the Haiku. I've got the "old" XR-E version in BB, the cool white XP-G and I fear I also must have the warm one...

There aren't that many options for Ti and AA, I would highly recommend getting a CR123 light. Mac's SST-50 EDC would be the stand out in that class as far as output goes, you'll be amazed!

My vote is for the Ti 4Sevens MiNi Quark AA.

It can use 14500 for that burst of extra brightness and has the versatility of using NiMH and reg alkalines which can be found everywhere.

If you want a pocket clip and/or clicky then opt for the regular Quark AA and pick up the different bodies later for 2AA, 123 and 18650 options.

All use the latest XP-G R5, have great warranties and top notch cust service. You can even get warm or neutral tints while they last.

Coupon code cpf8 would get you an 8% discount at 4sevens.com

I think if you are going to get a titanium light you should get a clicky not a twisty.

How much do you want to treat yourself?

If you're willing to splash out a lot of bucks, then you could buy one of, if not, the ultimate in Ti lights, the Tri-V 007. (see the Cool-Fall forum)

If Data doesn't build any more of these, you may see one or two make their way to Custom B/S/T eventually.

Other extremely satisfying high-end Ti lights are Mac's Ti EDC SST-50, McGizmo's Haiku-XPG or the up and coming Makai, or you could approach 2 of the most skillful Ti machinists, TranquillityBase or Mirage_man and ask one them for a custom build.

It looks like Data hasn't completely ruled out another run of Tri-Vs, but he's not going to be making them anytime soon.

I also highly doubt you'll see many of them for sale anytime soon. I can't see anybody parting with one now that I've seen one first hand. It more than lives up to the hype.

Honestly, the DST TLR might be a great option. It uses the JetBeam IBS interface (not sure if you're familiar with that or not). It's a great size for pocket carry and it's not too expensive that you're not going to want to carry it. Not knowing what you want to spend, it's easy to throw out all the high end luxury lights. The truth of the matter is that not everybody is comfortable carrying a multi hundred $$ light in their pocket. You wouldn't be the first person to buy a $500 McGizmo with the intention of carrying it and then find that you just can't bring yourself to do it. That's when you buy a second McGizmo so that you can carry one of them. ;)

Wow thanks for all the replies and great advice.

I may have to wait a bit though, or lower my budget... Originally I thought about really treating myself and spending up to $500 on a light, but since my original post, I injured my ankle and now there are a bunch of medical bills for MRI's and such.

For now, I may still be able to pick up one of the cheaper suggestions (TLR or Quark)... I appreciate the good advice!

Great value for money....... And also available in AA format (comp. with li-ion).

I've got one titanium light. But it's a good one.

Quark Mini-CR123 model.

189 lumens Out the Front for high mode. Useful Low and medium modes. No hint of green tint on mine. Just works and looks great. The AA version looks nice. But the CR123 version is truly small enough for keychain duty.

+1 for Quark mini Ti CR123 ! Still available from 4SEVENS at a most affordable price
and is probably the best value and certainly the best performer in this class of commercial 'lights. The Beam Pattern is quite superb!

A question on the Quark titaniums:

I love twisties, BUT, one issue I have had with just about all of my aluminum lights is intermittent or bad connections due (I think) to the aluminum oxide layer that quickly forms on bare aluminum. The oxide layer that forms isn't conductive.

Does titanium suffer from this problem, or does its oxide conduct OK? It would be a bonus to not have to worry about that kind of problem again.

I can't tell about bare aluminium, mine are all coated, but I never heard of such problems from titanium, nor did I experience one.

I think titanium immediately develops some kind of oxide (or is anodization in reality an oxide layer?) which is so thin, that you don't notice it and there are surely no conductive problems. Bare titanium rocks!!! :naughty:
