I would buy a Fenix L2D-CE. Its gives you much more output and fits in the Mags battery tube easily. Its even cheaper than those dropins.
Carrying a Mag only makes sense if you need the much room for a serious mod.
How bright do you want your maglite to be? Gene's drop-in is the brightest, but has the shortest runtime; around 8 hours in a 4D maglite. TerraLUX's TLE-6EX is not as bright as Gene's Drop-in, but will last about 2-3 times as long in the same maglite. Mag Instruments Maglite drop-in is not as bright as the first two, but will last nearly twice as long as TerraLUX's TLE-6EX.I've seen the MAG-LITE 3W LED upgrade at stores, I assume it's either a Luxeon or a CREE? Will this be a decent bright & quick upgrade? or is there something else I could drop in there, like mebby a CREE Q5?
IIRC, Mag's drop-in uses Luxeon 3 led. There are many other drop-ins too, for example Malkoff drop-ins have good reputation in CPF.

Uh huh... tell me about it! I just purchased a TerraLux TLE-6EX-B for my 3D Mag, still it's way better than the stock incan' bulb setup it originally used
