Ok, go easy on me, I admit I know nothing. But sometimes ignorance is a good thing? I spent 40 years with 5-10 dollar flashlights and didn't know any better. Then, one day I was at a local sporting goods/gun shop for an open house and the Surefire rep was there. Long story short, I walked out with a Surefire U2 that I paid about $250 for. Fella's, I got SOLD! I didn't know what hit me but this was a way cool light.

A few days ago I bought a Surefire L1 CREE and I must say, It is a better light (for me) than the U2. Here is why I think so....Flawless smooth hot spot with "enough" spill AND reflection from other objects. Victoria's Secret model good looks, great size for its output, STUPID runtime especially when compared to the two cell lights that only have marginally more output. What else...with the F04 diffuser and a ball cap, it is a great walk around the camp site on a new moon light. The tail cap gives you momentary on with 2 levels, or constant on with a twist. I feel like I could drag this light down the interstate for 100 miles by its lanyard and it would still do what it was built to do.

Wow, I want to buy 2 more of these. A backup, and a backup to the backup. Also, I was probably lucky but my first one is as close to true white as I think it can get. Finally, before you tell me exactly how stupid I am, remember that you too had to start out unenlightened! Seriously, I welcome your comments, I want to know what else is out there.

With the new powerleds the 1xCR123 lights are sufficient for almost anything and offer runtime in addition to that.
The SF L1 is one such one-and-only candidate, among others.

The U2 and many more lights do suffer from the old LuxV that just can't match the efficiency of the Cree XR-E. In additino to that, the optic in the L1, while not offering a pretty white-wall beam, has one of the best outdoor beams I have ever seen. The field of vision is perfect, especially considering the size and output of this thing.

Yes the L1 is one sweet light. My favorite SF light without a doubt. Great size and versatility.

Welcome to CPF!!

I currently have one Milky L1 and another ML1 on the way.

Now I need a stock L1 cree to compliment the ML1's...

yeah the only thing i could think of to improve this light would be one of the older non clicky tailcaps then it would be absolutely bomb proof. i jsut bought a light yesterday so itll be a while until i get another but this is definately on my short list.

The low and high modes is like have two lights in one! :D

I tried my L1 Cree out the other night and was able to easily illuminate a backyard fence at 100' on high. Or reach out and touch the top of a telephone pole at 100'. And hit the vacant house across the street -- lit the whole thing up.

Even the low beam carries quite a ways. I can tell this will be my new "go to" light. The single battery is just the icing on the cake.

I agree - it's a sweet light. The only thing the U2 has over it is the ability to always select just enough light for a given task. That can save batteries, as well as night adapted vision.

But, being dual stage and single cell, it is hard to beat.

That's why I have both :)

I have an ML-1, an ML-2, and a U2. I love all 3 of my Surefires. I like the L1 so much that I will be getting another one and have Milky put a CREE Q5 in it, but leave the optic in it this time.

Yep, that is also one of my favorite out of my 7 other SureFire lights. It has great features and massive run time even on 1 battery.

I love mine as well. I was afraid that being used to a 12V light powered by a drill battery, the L1 would have to make up for it in looks and durability. Well it doesn't have to make up for anything. 280 lumens is a flat out lie by dewalt, and the L1 can match in output and out throw. Only with a brand new battery at full, the dewalt can win, for about 10 minutes.

In short, I sleep with this thing.
