Inexplicable L1D CE malfunction / recovery?

I once read that somebody "lost a mode" in L1D or L2D; e.g. the mode was 'skipped'. It was then posted that the mode 'reappeared'. Unfortunately I couldn't find the post so I hope it's OK to start a new thread.

I might have experienced a similar problem. I was using a home-made "tube" to extend the L1D body so that I could put 2 eneloops. At some point the L1D (with 2 eneloops) dimmed regularly. I turned it off & back on again, it started from the same light intensity (dim) & continuously dimmed in a regular manner. No matter how many times I turned it on / off, it always started from the previous light intensity (dim). I removed the home-made tube and L1D continued to dim regularly. My eneloops were new; I even switched to a known-working AA primary, but L1D still dimmed regularly until it shut off. I gave up, but then a few minutes later it worked as normal.

The regularity of the dimming was only judged by my eyes; I did not have any tool to quantify the rate. The tube was plastic with connectors to link the end of the body with the metal ring inside the tail.

Has anybody experienced similar problem? I cannot rationalise what caused the malfunction. It won't be fun if it happens in the dark. I cannot replicate the problem; my L1D works as expected with the stock body or the extended body.

I'm guessing that it's not the LED's fault, because it 'returned' to normal. I'm assuming that LED faulty is irreversible; please correct me if I'm wrong. The other alternative is the circuit; could it get 'confused'? Did leaving L1D unpowered for some time drain the remaining charge in the circuit so it 'reset'?

Would someone be able to enlighten me please?

Many thanks,
KK

It might have been started by bad contacts; what's funny was that the dimming was continuous; it didn't flicker. I saw the brightness went down to zero, then it couldn't turn on. Just when I was thinking to send it back to the retailer, I tried my luck & it worked. Weird.
