This pic was taken not long after Pearl Harbor was attacked....it shows searchlights on a unidentified flying object over Los Angeles being fired upon by anti aircraft guns.

Hmm, it looks like they got spooked and pointed the searchlights in the same direction and made a huge glow. Next thing you know they're shooting at it! War nerves for sure. I can see how these things happen during war.

When I had my 60 Carbon Arc, I donated it and me to the annual re-enactment of the Los Ageles air raid night! There were 5 of us lights in action along with some very heavy cannon fire an a chrysler hemi powererd air raid siren. Lots of fun if you can make it.

fascinating... thanks for sharing gents. I love reading about WWII history. Must have been a very tense time period living on the pacific coast.

Just watched the videos. What a golden era, even in the midst of such an uncertain war.

...and why is it that every time there's an interesting topic, you always seem to be right in the middle of it with so much experience!

Because light is magical and I love it! I've never kept interest in any hobby for more than a couple/3 years. I'm as excited to be here now as I was on the first day. I'm also very fortunate to have had a good, steady job that allowed/allows me to buy some neat lights! I'm a natural "how does it work" type of personality so I love to delve into the inner workings and theorys and see the "numbers".

There's definitely something very special about light!

I just noticed the vimeo video was recorded on my favorite video camera- that I don't have. The amount of talent that camera brings out in people is always amazing. It's funny that when watching the video, I happened to notice the resemblence to so many other videos I've seen made with that camera, then when I clicked to the vimeo site fore more info about the video, low and behold it's the EX1.

On a side note, Since the EX1 produces such natural vibrant color very low light conditions, it would make the perfect video camera for videoing lights here on CPF. Check out how well it handles the tirck-or-treaters with their flashlights and glowsticks in this video from the same producer:

Anyone know what that old song is? I hear it in a lot of movies.

If you want to really read something interesting (in my opinion anyway) on the subject, read up on the Air Force radar station on Mount Umunhum.

To be honest, when I scrutinise the image, the beams look almost like they had been airbrushed in. Shouldn't the source of lighting be significantly brighter? :duh2:

I do not know much about it.....but from what I have read researching it a little on the net....it was taken by a LA newspaper photographer....that may be a scan of an old newspaper photo....hence the poor quality?
