Odd Q. I have seen IR ill beams wearing NVG's before. They stick out like spotlights.

Is there any other way they can be spotted?

Some digital cameras can detect it. Actually, I believe virtually ALL CCD's pick it up but it is filtered out in most cameras and camcorders.

There was a bit of consternation caused back in the early/mid 90's with the first couple generations of the Sony "Night Vision" handycams as during daylight they could somewhat "see" through light clothes. Later models had filtering added to prevent this but I'm sure google would bring up some info about it.

Anyway, go buy a cheap $20 security cam and I bet it will show IR too.

Get one of the security cameras with the ring of IR leds around it for viewing stuff at night, then youre certain the CCD/lenses dont have an IR blocking filter. Disable the IR led ring and then at night you can see IR emitters without throwing out any of your own.

If you put an IR pass filter on the lens you could view only IR during the day too, though you'd still be competing with the sun.

An IR pass filter on a DSLR makes for interesting photographs of translucent materials and plastics in general. Some things become clear (like fronts of VCRs) and some become opaque or tinted. Dyes and inks look a lot different, a wood table looks fine, but something with a cheap printed veneer on it may look totaly blank. Makes you wonder what it's like for species that can see IR or see UV.

after buying Nailbender IR 940nm, I just turn it on in front of my webcam on Mac and it's detected just like any other flashlight would.
