The Mini AA2 weighs 1 oz.

The Regular AA2 weighs 2.2 oz.

I read somewhere that the casing is thinner. It is less than 1/2 the weight of the Regular AA2 and must be less heavy duty.

I am considering using it for an emergency light in my day hiking pack and want something durable. What do you think?

The casing should be the same.
The diameter between the Mini AA and the AA^2 is identical.
(0.7 inches)

There shouldn't be any durability issues but I can see where you are coming from.
But 4Sevens wanted to create that form factor for a 2 AA light, so if you want something with a wider profile that could be possibly more durable, go with a regular Quark. :)
