I'm looking for a direct replacement for a 40 watt (I think) bulb, with current gen. emitters. Any suggestions besides DX and Kai?

Not worth it.
Fridge doors are open seconds at a time. You won't save on your electricity costs. Meanwhile good LED bulbs cost a fortune.
40W bulbs make 400+ lumens. An LED bulb of that power is too big to fit.

what he said, I do have a bulb on the water/ice dispenser though I got from walgreens for $2 that has 3x5mm LEDs in it. works great I leave it on 24/7 supposed to cost 25 cents a year to run it.

I don't agree. Lets say 20 minutes a day open total (some don't know how to close the dang thing) times 365, which is roughly 122 hours and that adds to 28.55 a year versus 7.14ish for led. Add that to the amount of bulbs replaced and heat generated and it will pay for itself in 2 years. 3 current gen led in a bulb with about 133 lumens each should be about right and that wouldn't be that big. I'm still not sure what watt we're using now, but it's 120 volt.

20 minutes????

Big family of youngsters?

I'd say a big bungee cord to return the door to 'closed' would save far more electricity.

my fridge ice dispense bulb says 12V, 6W. is that LED bulb from walgreens 12v?

If you want to save $$$ on running a fridge get one that is not frost free. There is a lot of energy used in the defrost cycle then that heat needs to be removed. Want to make $$$ then make a "Smart defrost" fridge.

Good luck with your project.

Doesn't answer your question at all, but I wanted to post anyway. :)

I wanted MORE light, and wanted to avoid heating up the dual 50W bulb-heaters that normally come on when the door is opened. Our fridge is opened for more than a few seconds at a time. Fortunately it starts to beep after one minute of being open.
