I just bought a Light Stick 20Watt dive light.
Dead cells,
1,7 Ah 12V need replacement.

Its a simple tube, halogenbulb in front, switch / socket on the rearend tailcap. It has a build-in Nimh-charger printboard.

I read someone modded this model to 3 Ah 14,4V and 40 Watt bulb.

How can I do this with the Nimh-charger still handling the batterys correctly?

I doubt it, I am almost sure the charger design is centered around the expected battery voltage and putting in two extra batteries the charger will be unable to supply the higher voltage and charge rate and terminate properly. I would guess you would have to buy an external charger and I almost think the way the extra 2.4 voltage (from the extra 2 cells) came about is the removal of the charger circuit board which made for more room. It is possible the person that modded it figured out how to mod the circuit board to accomodate the higher voltage, I would suggest you try and contact them if possible and ask.

You are right.
I will make a batterypack of soldered Eneloops, and if necessery use an external universal charger.
