LiPo charging sack

Some people also chearge their lipo's in terracotta pots so fire is directed straight up and out of harm's way. Make sure nothing flammable is directly above the pot though.

I have one of these. I also have some brand-name Lipo-Sacks. I use them when charging lipos for my rc hobby. If you ARE charging lipos indoors, I would definitely use one to protect your house and everything else. Lipos are serious business when they go awry.

Hmmm, what about multi celled packs installed in a HID light??? Remove pack and put into the sack???
Iam talking about the L35..

Has anybody used these and are they recommended? I'm thinking this could save some of us close calls especially if we operate close to the edge. They are NOT a substitute for proper charge control, but I'm wondering if they provide peace of mind.

I think there are quite a few members here that use those, or a similar type bag when charging LiPo's, as well as LiCo's etc. As for close calls, I just charge then in my front pants pocket. If anything goes wrong, I know pretty much immediately! OK, just kidding.:)

Glad you're back from the dead, Mr. Stream. Oops, wrong Forum! As info, my ROP is still, my most used hotwire. :)

Great, thanks for the info.

I have a 50/38W HID that will be using LiPo on the way. That's what they claim though others tell me it's actually 6 x cylindrical 18650 LiCo.

I'm gradually moving towards safer cells like IMR/LiFE, but in the meantime this looks like good insurance.

:D Thanks for the welcome and good to know the ROP has been filling in for me in my absence :D

I thought the LEDs would have put it out of business but it looks like the party is still going

Holy carp I just saw this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3o_2mwRPdw

Would one of those heavy glass baking trays work as well or would they shatter? I notice one of their experiments is conducted in a fishtank too.

In the meantime I'll pick up one of these devices.... they are cheap insurance too, and very affordable for what they do.

My bad about the HID. I think it's conventional LiCo. I didn't buy the other one using LiPo :)

I charge my LiPo batteries in a steel box. You can drill a few holes in it to direct the venting wherever is safest.

I've seen a few people use small army surplus ammo boxes.

Yeah, going just by numbers, they're about there, now. Sometimes it's nice to actually see what you're looking at though, particularly outdoors, and I still find my ROP usefull for that. Moonwalks are great, and very bright, but.....

With IMR cells the ROP is now a lot lighter - and safer too. I have a couple of IMRs on the way from AW to upgrade my lithium ROP. Finally not having to worry about excessive discharge rates - that would be good :)

Kevin, yeah those have been around for a few years now, mainly promoted at the RC Forums, but they are a worthwhile accessory. There are other techniques that can also work, but nothing substitutes for a quality charger, checking voltage with DMM, knowing about various Lithium chemistries, etc.

Great. The sack is my last line of defense-in-depth, hopefully I will never actually need to take advantage of its capabilities. The smoke alone already looks sufficiently annoying to give me incentive to never let it get that far :)

The Hyperion EOS5i charger is pretty good, very gentle LiPo charge with progressive ramp-down of the current. I have no LiPos but I use that mode to charge Li-ion since the charge protocol is the same.
