Hi all I am new to CPF lovecpf And I never thought I woudl find a place like this lol.
Well, I do have some electronics background, and an interest in some DIY stuff, and flashlights too. I've been reading some stuff on these forums and I want to modify my 3D Cell LED maglite.

So I am looking for a suggestion of what set up to use based on the build I am looking for for this particular light. I want to build this light so it will have really high LED output, at the cost of duration, and does not need a lot of throw I want it to really light up a (Relatively) small area. I am just fine with giving up most or all focusing abilities as long as (And correct me if I'm wrong) I can set it to a wider focus and leave it there since I want a wider beam rather than a tight beam for long throw. I'm willing to change any parts on this light except changing it from running on 3D cells. If you can list a set of parts for a good build that meets this spec, and a link to at least one place I may get that part, it would be much appreciated.

Your looking at a SSC P7 or Cree MC-E LED for the type of beam you want.

Read this thread HERE

Or for the cheap way, get an LED dropin of choice, a glass lens, and this.

You can play with the severity of the etching as well as the placement in order to get the beam you want. Get a few lenses and try different patterns using masking tape or adhesive dots to mask off areas. I guess it also hinges on how much brightness you deem necessary.

there are numbers of leds and halogen conversion you can make, there are planty of info on this site (too much sometimes), but keeping 3d cells limit your options great deal.
you could get radio shack aa bat holders mod them and use rechargables, whitout boring out the body, 4,5v alkalines don't have enough power for most mods, even if you use alkalines aa, (your light could fit 12), you have a lot more options, if interested pm me i,ll tell you how to mod radio shack holders to fit in maglite, i did post it before, but it was long time ago, idk if you can still find it.

I am in the middle of a nice 3D mod at the moment. When I say mod, I mean re-build. Here's what I am putting on the light:

UCL window from flashlightlens.com
MOP aluminium reflector from kaidomain.com (also ordered a SMO reflector, going to experiment)
Executive crennelated bezel from malkoffdevices.com
3-4D dropin module from malkoffdevices.com (not the P7 one, that's for another project ;))
Xcape cap tailcap from malkoffdevices.com
Short gold plated tailcap spring from kaidomain.com
Finned maglite head from Jesus Hernandez of this forum. (I am sending him the original head for machining)

Going to be running that on 3x NiMh D cells. This is my first high performance light mod but from the feedback I have been getting it is going to be a good light with plenty of throw and nice even spill. I haven't received any of the parts yet so am eager to get them and get it built.
