I have a quark 123 turbo for my walking light at night for a while and I really have enjoyed it thus far. I've got the itch for an upgrade and I'm wondering is there a brighter light with a little better throw out there for the same price range and of equal size?

Check out the MG P-Rocket SST-50 on shiningbeam.com, might be what you are looking for.

lota folks are anit-chinese here

but i am a fan of our commie friends!!!

they make good stuff!

the maelstrom from forty sevens is dyn-o-mite! got one finally and walk with it--it's a cannon if i've ever seen one.

if you need more, the tk 40 or 45 will nock yer socks off x 2

and if you can wait

...oh billy...

is insanity! 1200 gorgeous lumens out the front! a new mastery of light! i'm savin my pennies now...

dont know about another light of the same size, price, and throw. you might have too comprimise somewhere.

how about a P60 host such as a dereelight CL1H host ($35) solarforce L2P host ($20) or a surefire 6P, C2, Z2, M2, with a SST-50 drop-in?

i dont think the SST-50 even with smooth reflector will throw better, but it will be putting out over 500 lumens. with a big hotpsot. and alot of spill.
a SST-90 nailbender drop-in is one of my favorites. the output size/ratio is incredible.

I was thinking about the Jetbeam rrt-0 R5 but I don't think it would be any better than the 123 turbo. What about the fenix tk12 R5?

A single 18650 light with an MC-E, SST-50, or P7 emitter will be what you want.
The light you have uses an XP-E emitter which is great for small lights but cant be driven much over 1 amp. So you can expect 200 lumens.

An 18650 light will have over twice the juice of a CR123 battery, but it is still pretty compact and light.

I agree that the p-rocket is a pretty reasonable solution and can produce triple or 4x your current output. Obviously it will get hot if you keep it on high mode for the entire walk though because it lacks the mass to dissipate heat quickly enough.

How would the throw be compared to the Quark turbo I'm using?

The MGP rocket will have much less throw than a quark turbo so I don't think you want taht since you asked for a light with more throw. The RRT-0 will have the same throw and be a little less bright. As someone else said, the Maelstrom is about the same size but has a lot more throw. To get even more throw without adding much size you will be into a dedicated thrower like a Jetbeam RRT-1 or Tiablo A10 (or get a bigger multi 18650 light but than you are in a different size category). Most like more flood than throw for walking and I think that is why people are suggesting the MGP rocket.

Where did you get the idea many are anti Chinese?,vast majority of the bought brands are Chinese, even the German giant Led Lenser has a factory there.

I think I might get an olight m21 sst-50 and see how I like it. maybe an m30?

Solarforce L2P with tactical clicky switch, 18650 battery, and whatever P60 drop-in you want. That has solved my need for constant upgrades for a while -- I just buy a new drop-in when I get the craving (about to replace the XP-G with an SST :D ) and maybe a new bezel if I'm really itching for something new

both the olight m21, and m30 are not throwers. the m20 is a better thrower.

the surefire E2DL or LX2 are great throwers for the size, and the beam is a work of art.

the quark 123 turbo is a good thrower for its size, you will need a light with a bigger head to get noticably more throw. take a look at the dereelight DBS. jetbeam RRT-1, jetbeam M1X, MS2. tiablo A9, A-10G

P-Rocket's a floody light without a lot of throw. The X-Thrower version would probably fit the OP's requirements better.

The P-Rocket is not meant to be a thrower, but because of the high output it does 'throw' its wall of light farther than similar sized lights. I find its great for walking as it lights up a larger area instead of an intense spot with some spill.

If its a thrower you want, the previous suggestions are all pretty good and i'd just like to add in the Jetbeam M1X, definitely larger than the RRT-0 but it throws, trust me it throws. My warm tint M1X on 2x18500s is a great light though a tad bulky.

1st recommendation; Fenix TK-11 is a very nice light. Great throw, good flood, very reasonable on the price and mine has been very reliable.

2nd, SF LX2, awesome, everything the TK-11 is but thinner and very nice beam that looks like it wants to keep going, not as much flood-but ok. Cost a lot more....Buy used, some good deals out there.

My TK-45 is a very nice light but if your dogs are like my dogs, no way would I carry my TK-45, too heavy, too big for just dog walking, YMMV.

Good luck...

Just curious, why a throwey light for walking? My current preference for walking is Quark AA2 Neutral R4, floody and great tint for seeing cracks in the pavement and the whats on the ground.

I walk at night in the countryside and I like to have a medium thrower to see things before I get to close to animals.

I have a MGP rocket also but find myself reaching for my Electrolumens DeCree because it is similar in output to the MPG, but feels so much better in hand.

I'm thinking now after looking at selfbuilt's reviews that the best light for it's size and beam pattern is the maelstrom G5 it's as bright as the olight M21 and has better throw. I thought about the thrunite catapult V2. Wow what a thrower but I think it's a little big.
