Hey guys, been reading a bit about the HID Light options available...

I'd love to have something small (hand held) like the wolf eyes or similar units... but I'm not quite ready to spend that kind of money on one (yet)

I'd like to get something just ridiculously bright, I'm not necessarily picky about being HID, but right now the brightest light I have is a Mag85 (which is really floody, need to find a new reflector and setup for it) and would like something that would just make it look puny, preferably over 1000lumens, probably closer to the 2000+ category..

This isn't my first HID, I have 2 UK Light Canons that I used for video lights for underwater video (worked good) and previously owned a dive rite 10W hid for diving (sold now) but the light canons are not very bright for 10W, I think my ROP Hi outputs more light than them...

I'd like to stay smaller, but would like at least about 20-30mins runtime (and hour or so would be nice) I'd like to try something around the 35W range (like I said, ridiculously bright)

And would like to stay around or under $100.

I've read that you guys usually say the harbor frieght is about the best for the price (I think I remember that) but curious for other choices...

Mainly want tight spot, crazy throw... kinda want a small light though, which usually contradicts each other...

So perhaps 2 recommendations, one as small, light weight, etc, as I can get, yet as bright as possible for around $100 (say <$150 or so)

And the other as bright as possible, longest throw, size be of no concern, for the same price range... and I'll figure out which looks more interesting to buy first.

Preference on something I might be able to find locally, but in reality realize I probably won't find anything locally (store here suck)

Also there's the always practical Amondo tech N30 which should be available once the site gets restored. $149, runs at 30W and is smaller than the Sam's/Vector HID. I have both and love them dearly. Yea the Amondotech is a liiitle more than the Vector but thats up to you. :)

Re: Looking for an HID Light

LOL, that's funny, I pulled out the UK's again, and thought again, these are way dim, and WOW purpley, then it clicked, the batts are probably about done for, I've run them for probably over 4hours on the current cells...

Changed them, and WOW about 3times the light, and o so not purple :)

Back on topic, I take it the best recommendations are for either the power on board or the N30 (when it's available again) no recommendations for the Harbor Freights or anything else?

What kind of difference is there between them... The N30 is smaller, but otherwise hows it compare?

Re: Looking for an HID Light

the power on board is just a GREAT deal you WILL NOT be dissapointed

Re: Looking for an HID Light

Take a hard look at the N30 and you'll pull the trigger in an instant. It throws to about 300 yards, puts out more than 3000 lumens, 70 minutes runtime, less than 4 lbs, $150.

Re: Looking for an HID Light

I have the Power On Board that everybody's talking about, bought it used/excellent from thezman and only paid 50 bucks shipped. Awesome light for the money. It's heavy as hell for a relatively small light, but bright and great throw.

It's a lot heavier than the Thor; most of the weight is in the thick glass window and thick metal reflector.

Re: Looking for an HID Light

well, what did you get?

Daveman, where is the N30 sold now? I've sorta been out of the N30 loop...thanks.

Re: Looking for an HID Light

Haven't gotten anything yet... Sounds like the N30 might be the way to go though.

Re: Looking for an HID Light

The N30 will be available from www.amondotech.com once the new owner Matt has everything setup.

Please be patient, he moved 4 or 5 - 53' trailers full of stock from California to Connecticut. Once the new warehouse is properly setup the web site will be open again.

Take Care,

Thanks mtbkndad. And just out of curiosity, where did the N35 leave off? Wasn't there a li-ion light to come?

Thanks

Sorry about the late reply,
I have been very preoccupied with non CPF stuff lately.
I do believe you were referring to the L35.
I will need to contact Matt so I can explain everything I have done up to this point on that project and see what he wants to do with it.

I will call him next week some time.

Re: Looking for an HID Light

Thanks everyone for the info, I picked up a new HID today...

I wanted to look at the ones at Harbor Freight, and we have one about 30mins to the north of me. Today we went up to hit a couple of stores, and look at a few things, and I stopped in... The one I was expecting (the old $89 one on clearance) was no where to be found... however the newer, nicer one, that lists as $129 on the website was in store.

I looked at it for a bit, an realized it looks just like the power on board (near as I can tell) so I went ahead and picked it up... noticing as I grab it the price tag says $99... So I was even more happy now that the light was less than I had expected...

Fired it up a couple times when I got home, and again just a bit ago... man this thing is insanely bright, perhaps stupidly bright, or ridiculously bright...

I have no idea when/where or how I will ever use it, perhaps when we go camping, or maybe it will live in the back of my car? But it's pretty much what I was looking for, something so insanely bright, everyone falls over or just is left speechless... I've seen reactions of unsuspecting public to a friends Mag100 (whoa as the guy on the street 3 floors bellow us about fell over, during a power outage) and my Light Canons went up against it recently, with fairly similar results over 300yards distance (slightly less visible) and this of course smokes the light canons.

Beam is not as tight as I was expecting, but still puts out a huge beam of light for what I can only assume will be at least 400-600 yards without much trouble... Should be able to test it out in a month or so at 300yards plus distance.

The color does seem a bit more white than the UK's which are 6000k but not by much (after taking some shots with camera)

The best part, has to be the "luxor" like beam shooting into the sky... won't do that much as I live near an airport :) But very cool... who needs a $500 laser, when you can have a $100 light that does the same thing :D

Re: Looking for an HID Light

cough cough, uh mm,Did that satisfy your light craveings for a little while, CONGRATS on your light

Re: Looking for an HID Light

Nah, but filled the space I was looking for in my collection for the insanely bright, "what on earth would you need something that bright for" light

Re: Looking for an HID Light

well for one thing if you have it in your car, like i have my sams in my truck, your always ready, for example if someone happens to be using some type of light for anything, at least you can win!!

Re: Looking for an HID Light

Good point... my car light isn't exactly the brightest, but it works, I've got a 4D I think it is Mag with a 5W single Luxeon in it... pretty bright for the what, 20-30hour runtime or whatever they have to them...

This HID is crazy bright, just tried it out at an unknown distance approx 200+ yards, not a tight bright spot, but an easy 100' wide area lit up nice an bright... Not your short range light by any means. (never meant to be) Deffinatley will go with me camping, etc... and may end up living in my car too... I didn't hardly notice the weight with it slung over my shoulder...

We got a really large lava cave over the mountain from me, perhaps time to re-visit and take that thing, of course no one else will be able to see anything, cause I'll be blinding them :)

I like being prepared anyways... still working on my gear in the car, but let's just say there is no cargo room in the back, it's all full with spare clothes, 10 Turbo Flares (love ebay), water, blankets, trauma kit (still working on it, but it's a full size backpack that will eventually be full) So why not a 3500 lumen spotlight :)

Re: Looking for an HID Light

I couldn't resist, I had to go an modify the light a little... good news is if the power goes out I shouldn't have any trouble finding it :) It also glows bright enought to cast a faint glow, and create a little bit of light in the room...

Added Glow Tape to the top bit of the light, top of handle, and bottom (bellow lables) on each side.

Removed Lens/Bezel and added Glow Paint to inside of the bezel on the 5 tab like spots.
