Anyone have any suggestions for a low-profile latching switch with minimal thrown on the switch? Most of the ones I've found are just too big or require too much throw on the switch.
I have looked at the smaller momentary switches, would are right in every way except the latching part - I haven't found dependable latching circuitry, and I'm not an expert at that (or this )
I faced exactly the same problem when building this mod: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=154834 . There are many momentary microswitches, but only few latching ones. After a long search I found the latching microswitch (some 4 mm tall) in a surprising place... in a Photonpump V8 keychain light that I disassemblied! So now it is in the mag HID mod that I referred to.
In case you can't find a latching switch you can use momentary switch coupled to a flip-flop circuit, see e.g. here: http://www.talkingelectronics.com/FreeProjects/5-Projects/Page16.html It is relatively easy and straightforward to build but it has (at least one) disadvantage: it consumes some power also when the actual load is disconnected.
