Review number 42.

Energizer Illumifold Fluorescent Lantern.

I apologise in advance for the quality of the photos, this is too big to photograph on Macro mode as I usually do, so I had to take them from across the room an enlarge, hence the quality suffered. There's still a couple of typos in there too. A couple of people wanted this review done, so I hurried it a bit, hence the page still needs to be "polished"

As usual, comments/questions welcome!

Thanks for the great review!/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/happy14.gif At $12.95 I think I'll have to get me one or two of those. Now I just need to find a place that carries 'em.

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

I believe - note, believe, I can't actually remember, that the two I was sent were originally bought in Target. Also believe they've been sighted in some Home Depot stores and possibly even WalMart. Note, all these stores are many thousand miles from me, so I'm working purely from memory of what I've seen here...and my memory ain't the most reliable of things!

Good review, very thorough. Thanks. The pictures are fine.

I see you also have one of the Energizer 4AA LED lanterns. I picked up one of these recently and will be interested in seeing your evaluation.

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

I got mine at Walmart maybe as much as a year ago...

Only way we could really lose power for any stretch of time would be a hurricane.

That said, somewhere around a year ago we lost power for about 8 hours. I woke up to no fan etc. I placed a Garrity 3AAA light on low in a cup facing up in one bathroom, and a 4AA 2LED light on low in the other, and went back to sleep! They were PLENTY of light in the total darkness.

I'll be passing Lowes and Walmart today on my way home so I'll check it out. Tomorrow I'll try HomeDepot and Target. I'll post here with my results. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

Thanks for that terrific review. Here's a commercial closeup of the lantern

Zelandeth's review was right on the money. This cleverly designed lantern is a little gem and has replaced all my bulky 8 D cell Colemans. It folds to a remarkably small size, is relatively light (compared to the 8Ds) and gives more than adequate light for a surprisingly long time.

In addition to its usual folded positions the outer half can be rotated up a full 180 degress so that it is on top of the battery case which permits full exposure of the tubes. During the last blackout I put white lampshades on top of two fully extended lanterns and my big living room felt almost cosy.

This is a thoughtfully designed effective product; too bad more folks don't know about it.

ATTENTION WALMART SHOPPERS!!!!!

At the second to last Old Style Store (NOT 24hr Supercenter) located on Telephone Rd/Hwy 35s in Pearland, TX they have these on clearance. They had quite a few as of tonight.

Get this!!!

$2.00 EACH!!!

They have 2 less as of when I left, and the checkout girl said she was gonna grab a couple too!

Man, if the power ever does go out here, I'm COVERED!

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

where is Pearland,Tx I have a sister that lives near spring,Tx I may have her pick up a few for me since I haven't seen them here at all for over 6 months.

Never mind, I looked both up on yahoo maps and it is 40 miles on the other side of houston. I have a feeling that isn't on her route and she is really busy.

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

Nice review & site as well! Thanks for posting that!!

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

I stopped by the Lowe's and picked one up for $14.47 +tax. Kind of strange how different Lowe's have different prices - not by much though. I have a $25 Lowe's card I got several months ago for buying a ladder so I didn't mind the price.

I'll stop by the Walmart tomorrow and see if they're on clearance over here.

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

Aside from that incredible $2.00 sale a Froogle search shows that you all are getting these at bargain prices. I paid more for mine.

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

Walmart had them at 12.96 for a few years then they vanished here. I never saw a closeout on them at all at 3 walmarts.
I am going to ask my sister in Houston to check the walmarts there and if she finds them for 2.00 to pick up at least 5 of them for me.

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

I got mine a couple months ago at Home Depot in CT for 12.97.

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

Well, the LED version's next in line to be reviewed, and I have the photos now taken, and a fair amount of the text ready. However, I will be AWAY FROM THE HOUSE from this Friday (15th) to the 27th, hence will not be able to work on the site until then if I don't get it up tomorrow. I should have internet access, so I can still check CPF...just nto spend hours here as usual, and be able to answer email. Okay...back to going to finish that review...

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

I do not think d cell akaline batteries will put out 600 ma for 20 hours(30 hours no way) 30 hous on low would be stretching it.

600 ma at 6 volts is only 3.6 watts so the 5 watt tubes are way under driven.

still looks like a nice light for 12 bucks

Re: LOZ New Review: Energizer 4D Fluorescent Lante

Those are 4 watt tubes and yes they are underdriven as far as that is calculated. I have a few lights using 4 watt tubes and they measured about 300ma at 6v for about 2watts and that decreases as the batteries are consumed which probably drops to under 1.5 watt at half battery life or less.

I am unsure why small battery powered flourescent lights seem to be underdriven, my two theories are it is on purpose or when the original tubes came out the ballasts were calculated into the amount of power consumed and both ballast and tubes have become a lot more effecient.
