Besides the flat top receiver, the M4 has a 14.5" barrel and collapsible stock. There is also the M4A1 that is full-auto instead of 3 round burst. The full size (20") version with the flat top is the M16A3.
I've fired an M16A1 with no oil and full of dirt that still worked until I got a bad mag that caused a double feed. That is the weakest point of the M16, the magazine. Thin aluminum feed lips just don't cut it.
I prefer the M16 over the AK because I shoot better with it. The AK always feels a little awkward. Other big pluses for the M16 are the bolt old open and fast magazine changes. As for caliber, for me it's a draw. They both have their advantages. Right now I have a Maadi AK because it was cheaper replacement for the AR15 I had to sell. In basic training I had a Drill Instructor who had been wounded by a captured M16 in Vietnam and he was of the opinion the the 5.56 was quite adequate.
The XM8 only has a 12.5" barrel? There goes some more of the 5.56's high velocity.
