Hello all!!!

I'm new to the forum, and someone on the incand. board pointed me over in this direction, so I have some questions for you all. Number one, I have a 6D maglite that I have owned for almost 20 years now, and recently have been seeing LED maglites at the local mega-stores (Wally-world, Kmart, target, Meijers, etc.) I know that there is at least one drop-in LED module for D-cell mags, made by nite-ize. Are there others? How do they compare in brightness/candlepower/lumens to the current Mag-num Xenon bulbs that are made by Mag? This maglite was given to me as a Christmas gift when I was a teenager, and it has been through heck and back with me. It has accompanied me on Security jobs, camping outings, it has seen service on the road with me as a Paramedic (cops were jealous-they could no longer carry them). It may sound odd or weird, but I am REALLY attached to this maglite. Probably the most significant item to me that I have ever owned. It has been a true trooper. I am also in the market for a thrifty (cheap, less than $25) LED flashlight to keep at bedside. Are the Garrity, Brinkmann, or Dorcy lights any good? See them getting price reduced at the local Wally-World and Meijers. My other Choice would maybe be an Inova 5-LED light, unknown model name or #. the bedside light would be for home safety/security reasons. When the lights go out here by me, my apt gets DARK!!!!!. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, any recommendations for modding will have to be extremely limited in complexity, (read, Drop-in, not electronically or mechanically inclined-thats why I'm a paramedic and not an electronics repair tech. or electrician). Thank you in advance for any help/recommendations.

for the mag get this 6ex , you will never need batteries again :twothumbs it gets 20hrs high output on 4d so 6d will be much longer

get this secondary light its worth the extra $15 runs on 1aa or if you want 2aa get this

Very few dropins can take all 6 cells pumping out 9v, so you may want to consider putting in 2 dummy cells, or making one yourself. By limiting yourself to 4 cells, you open yourself up to many more possible dropin upgrades, including the Mag brand. However, with the NiteIze in the 6D, you could probably limit battery changes to every decade...
