Ok so I got impatient on modding a light so I started to refurbish my old duty light, D-cell maglite. All I could really find was a Maglite 3 cell drop in LED, maglite brand. This is correct for my light.

It will burn steady and then carry on flickering, etc. I am using NiMH batteries and never have before in a light that big, just AA or AAA.

Now I used to build all my coon hunting lights and even sold some, but I have never done much of anything besides drop in mods on mini mags in flashlights.

Where would you start looking for the problem? I intend to do a lot to this light over time but for sentimental reasons, not because I can't or wont buy better. I would really like to fix it.

Any help?:poke:

There are plenty of interesting things you can do to a MagD - putting in a simple LED drop-in is certainly one of them, but there are other options you might also like to consider.

The LED drop-in option will give you reasonable output and very good run-time, which may be all you want. However before you finally decide, you may want to take a look at some of the hotwire incan and other options you will find in the Homemade & Modified section.

I remember mag specifies NOT to use nimh cells with their drop in, maybe try alkaline first see if it goes away?

I will do that...trying the Alkaline until I can get a better drop in. I didnt see it but I dont always look really carefully either with NiMh. I appreciate any thought and I am certainly going further than just a store drop in....I was just getting impatient.

I just received a Malkoff drop-in for my 3D Mag tonight. It rocks. It seems to have excellent heat-sinking, and is regulated to run at 1000 mA (240 lumens) for 6 hours on a set of alkalines. It is a sweet upgrade.

The only problems are 1) getting one, and 2) they're not exactly cheap. The production is low, and they sell out very quickly. If you're interested, sign up at www.malkoffdevices.com, and you can get an email from Gene when he puts new stock on the site. It's definitely worth the effort to get one. Regarding the price, I really believe that you get what you pay for, and I have no regrets paying for this drop-in.
