So, I decided to go with the Malkoff Drop-In for my Mag 2D...and other than the drop-in, just run it stock.

Is this a bad idea?

1- Is upgrading the reflector necessary?

2- Is a clear glass lens really necessary?

Thanks-

1. The neck of the reflector will have to cut off, for fit of drop-in. Malkoff sells cut down mag reflectors. You do not need a metal reflector.

2. You do not need a glass window, but will get better light transmission if you use a quality glass. Malkoff sells those also.

Make sure that you order a drop-in specifically for two or three cell mags. A better setup would be the use of two 18650's, or larger size Li-Ion cells in the 2D mag, and go with the 4-6 cell Malkoff drop in. You would need a spacer inside of mag body for a good fit of Li-Ions.

A comment about the glass lens: I have several Malkoff dropins to several Maglites. To all of them I replaced the stock plastic lens with the coated glass lens. Apart from higher light transmission you will also have the advantage that the glass lens doesn't attract dust like the plastic does.
Recommended!

This Mags lookin' at:

-glass lens
-reflector (Malkoffs')
-drop-in
-XCape cap

Thanks-

I recently bought a 2C drop-in for my gray MagLite 2C. I swapped the lens for UCL and cut the reflector. Bill's got a point, but I've got too many things to worry about to swap into more rechargeables, so I left it running on 2xC cells. It's extremely satisfactory. I think you'll be very happy, too.

Yeah, 18650's/Li-Ions would be the better way to go (as Bull said), but for now I need to keep the cost down...it should still be very good!
