Mercedes-Benz unveils swoopy 2012 CLS Class w/ full LED headlights

Yup, saw that a while ago. What a stunning car. I wonder what led emitter they use front and back! :D.

Expanding "LED", the sentence reads "The beam is made up of 71 individual light-emitting diode lights".

I wonder how much cash money you'd have to get out of the ATM machine to pay for a car like that. Hey, what kind of ATF fluid does it use?

The fluid in the transmission is unicorn blood.

The blinker fluid is orphans' tears.

Good to see LED headlights becoming more available. Maybe they'll start trickling down from super-luxury cars to regular luxury cars in a couple years.

I wonder which fictional supernatural being they had to cut a deal with to get the custom optics made? It's not like you can just slap some Crees inside your headlight reflector and expect the beam to look right, because each emitter will need its own optic.

I thought by now LEDs like the SST-90 would be powerful enough for them to move away from these 'showerhead' headlights.. But then I don't know much about automotive lighting.

I really don't like the way these 'arrays' look on cars. They remind me of the glitter jewelry little kids would stick around their eyes or something.

Is it just me or does this look silly?

Probably has a bitchin' LCD display, and a tach calibrated in RPMs per minute...

The LEDs shown are DRLs. These may have LEDs for the actual headlights, but they aren't on!

Yeah, but if they use 72 individual LEDs for the headlights on this one it's gonna have that same glitter-dust look.:sick2:

Isn't redundancy fun? One of my favorites is "hot water heater."

No, jellydonut, it's not just you; it really does look silly. Even Mercedes Benz can fall prey to the LED fad. What can we expect in a society that has decided to remake the movie "TRON?"

It WILL pass.... I keep telling myself.

I like LED's for their durability and super long life, as well as efficiency. But I know they aren't an answer for everything. I wonder how they compare with HID lights when it comes to lumens out per watts in.

The Audi DRLs are meant to look exactly like this. Whenever you see this style of DRL you instantly know it's an Audi. The R8 is also available with Full LED Headlight and you do not have this glitter-dust on the main beam, just on the DLR. Same goes for the rear lights.

The manufacturers want to show that they can do LED. The owners want to show that they can afford LED.

It's all about marketing.

I know they're meant to look like that, and I'm sure some 14 year old boys think they look cool, but..:green:

I'm trying to think of an equally silly auto fad but this tops even those awful tail lamps popularized by Lexus. I think maybe one has to go back to the American tail fins in the 50s to find an equally garish fad.

Anyway, any of you automotive lighting gurus know how much brighter the average headlamp is than an SST-90 driven at the hardest allowed by specifications with great cooling?

My dishwasher has a built-in hot-water heater. The one down in the basement is a cold-water heater, but we generally just call it a water heater.

Not to mention "The Karate Kid".

I like LED's for their (…) efficiency. I wonder how they compare with HID lights when it comes to lumens out per watts in.

How are you defining "efficiency"? The term for what you're wondering about is "efficacy".

The question can't be answered as asked. It's even less answerable than "How much bluer than the sky is the average blue crayon?". What is it you're asking about? Flux within the beam? Beam peak intensity? Intensity at some particular point in the beam?

Probably not. The Lexus LS600hL headlamp uses 54 emitters; it doesn't have a "glitter dust look" (whatever that means). Same (with varying emitter count) goes for the Cadillac Escalade Platinum, the Audi R8, etc.

2010 Prius != luxury car. It's just a car that people with luxury cars like to buy so that they don't feel bad about their luxury cars.

And I LOL'd out loud at Scheinwerfermann's comment
