I was asked to built a bike light out of a MiniMag. He wants the MiniMag to be cut down and the anodized in lime-green or powder-coated in white, not sure yet. The light will be used on a fixed-gear bicycle and the frame will be powder-coated in white.

I want to use:

  • OFC copper heatsink
  • XR-E Q3-5A
  • 700mA driver board
  • Ledil LM1-M optic
It should be a bikelight for city-use so I thought I should use a flood-optic. The only think what I'm not sure about is how I could mount the light to the bike. Anybody got a good for a mount that would look good on the bike?

When you say "flood optic" do you mean wide angle optic with circular beam pattern, or the type of optic that spreads the beam sideways (25x150º or whatever the exact specs are)?

I know but they wouldn't look really good. The bike is as I said powder-coated in white and the light is either powder-coated in white as well or anodized in lime-green. So I'm searching something inconspicuous like this but I don't know if this will hold the light.

The optic I have is a normal 'round' flood optic but such a optic that spreads the beam sideways is a nice idea. Do you are anybody know where to get this for a MiniMag?

I didn't see any XP-G dropins but there are XR-E dropins. But I really like to built it myself ;).

Ahhh thanks!
Anybody know where to get these xp-e dropins?
My minimag needs an upgrade :grin2:

The dropin I have is the Terralux TLE-EX5 there are tons of them on the bay but be sure that it is an XR-E dropin.

So anybody know where to get optics which spread the beam sideways and where to get an inconspicuous bike mount?

all parts together = more expensive than Fenix, Jetbeam, Quark, ...
optical appearance: depends on time put into
no multilevel
runtime of about 1 hour

imho its better to get a ready made light, or at least use a 1*18650 host

Perhaps clear/neon green o-rings for your mount. A thicker one between the bars and the light should stop it wrecking the finish.

As for where you can source optics, cutter do a wide variety of 10mm ones, including a 10mm square eliptical, you could easily take the corners off it to use in your application

I still had a 2AA MiniMag so the price would be less. As I said the bike is powder-coated in white with lime-green anodized elements. So a black anodized light wouldn't look very good ;). I decided to use a single-level driver but there are mutli-level driver with 700mA maximum. And regarding the runtime, with 4 Eneloops I get a runtime of 3h with an 80% efficiency included in the calculation. So I think it's worth it ;).

@ herulach
I found a 39x16° optic with a 20mm diameter hope it will fit. If it doesn't work out this way I'll come back to Cutter ;).
