Modding The LED On A Ti PD-S

I have determined that I am not the guy for this, but I wanted to know how hard the mods are to perform. Can they be performed reliably and flawlessly as the new emitters come out?

I remember reading that Don made the heads of these in such a way as to ease the changing of emitters as newer ones emerge; is this true?
