I received my P1D CE Q5 yesterday and tried it out last night. I am very pleased! It is brighter than I thought possible and tiny. I am carrying it in my jean's watch pocket along with my Swiss army knife.

I had been trying to decide between the L0D and the P1D. The smaller size of the L0D was appealing but the brightness and longer run time of the P1D was just too tempting. Also, I figured out that the CR123 batteries were not more expensive if I bought them online.

Friday I ordered the P1D from 4Sevens and 4xCR123s from BatteryStation. I also got a Streamlight Microstream for the wife. She keeps buying cheap keyring lights that break. Then came the waiting and worrying about what I would do if the light arrived before the batteries. Fortunately they arrived in the same mail delivery on Wednesday.

The twisty on the P1D was stiff as others have reported. I applied some superlube and now it is easy to work even one handed. Why does Fenix tell you to lube it but ships it dry? There was some black discoloration on the positive contact of the head. A gentle rubbing with a pencil eraser shined that up.

The beam is very even, presumably due to the OP reflector; I saw no artifacts. The color is the cool end of white, especially when comparing it to an incandescent. And did I mention it was bright?

If I could change anything it would be the brightness levels. The "primary" level is brighter than I would need for most uses. The "Max" level is brighter but the change is not as dramatic because the primary level is already so bright. I might like a lower low. I have not had time to play with the low level much. Certainly the low would be enough to walk around the house.

Oh, the wife is very happy with the Microstream. She is trying it with the lanyard around her neck. She leaves work after dark many nights so something to get her from door to car is useful.

This is my first quality flashlight purchase. I blame all of you :)

Hey Blinding, got to agree with ya!
i`ve tried carrying AA, and AAA flashlights
but nothing beats the pocket friendly P1D CE,
Bright?? lol .. wait till you stick in a rechargeable!! :eek:oo:

Glad you like it! i was amazed at my P1D CE when i got it like 2 years ago since it was the 1st cree light i had as well as the 1st single cr123 so it was the brightest as well as smallest light i had.
Ive been running mine on 3.7v rcr123 as i cant afford to buy primary cr123's and it also give me guilt free lumens.
Although the extra voltage leaves the light with all 3 modes being the same max brightness untill the battery gets used up which has its good points as it lets me know when the battery will need recharging and also gives longer runtime with the use of primary/low mode as the output slowly decreases from max without you noticing.

Congratulations! I agree with the comments here. That microstream is an incredible light I merged mine with my L0D so I have more power and that click switch. The P1D CE is with me at all times on my keys. It's so powerful that I occasionally don't need to EDC a light on my belt.

Sounds like a good light may just have to order one for myself, think that there may be one going for sale at the CPF Marketplace for $35, not sure if it's still up for grabs.

For another purchase you may want to look at a Jetbeam II Pro IBS, 3 modes, each individually programable but there have been comments that the regulation isnt that hot.

I love the IBS UI of the Jetbeams and it's a trade off between flexibility of light levels and runtime i guess, should balance out IMHO. But i just love that IBS!

Congrats on your P1D, I still maintain that it's the size-to-output crowd pleaser that everyone should own at least one copy of. Mine has nightstand duty with a tritium so I can see it plainly in complete darkness:

The IBS interface is totally worth it, just find the battery type that suits you and start buying; Once you get used to the interface, everything else seems awkward and stilted. Highly recommended!

The P1D is awesome...

I had the chance to get a natural one with a stripy finish with 20% off due to that little imperfection which doesn't affect its function at all.

I received it about 2 weeks ago and was so fascinated about the power and size that I ordered 3 more to make christmas presents out of them! :twothumbs Family will be happy, they get 3 cells with it.

But, I agree that there isn't a big difference between medium and high. Hard to believe that the Lumen should nearly double... If it really runs 2.8 hours on standard mode, I won't hardly need more...

I agree with StarHalo, it is a size-to-output crowd pleaser.

I started one of my sons off with a Arc AAA on his keychain and he thought it was good. I then got him a Fenix LOD CE and the Arc went into the drawer (I know, likely not a durable but we're talking wow factor here for a relative non-flashaholic). I then got him a P1D CE Q5 and the lOD is nowhere to be seen. I'm not sure I could pry the P1D out of his hands!

I have one that goes in my pocket when I'm in slacks or on my belt right behind my iPhone, and just ordered another yesterday as a backup!

They're great lights for the price!

I agree that it's a very nice light. But - - -

I, too used to keep it in the watch pocket of my jeans, until I realized that every one of them had worn a hole in the pocket from the light. I assume it's from the "X" shaped projection on the end.

Anyone else had this problem?

I've gone back to my L0D, for everyday use.

I guess the "natural" is back in stock... I had to get an "olive" when I got mine. (I like it fine though.) I carried a regular P1D CE for about a year before I got the Q5 version and I was still impressed.

The finish on both are nice but a lot of features would seem to be rough on pants. I'm sticking with the belt holsters. (Which seem to be holding up extremely well.) I save my pockets for the Arc and L0D.

hehe, another P1D fan thread...i recall there being at least 2 others?

:D

now if only Leef was able to copy that natrual...

@the op, i too at one point thought the low was too high, but surprisingly, its perfect most of the time, when i need a diffused light (with the fenix diffuser)

its too bright in certain applications though, ill agree, so maybe what they need is to transfer the Low as the "med" output, have a lower low, and keep the current high" out put...

but who am i to complain...i love that little light..:D

mine happens to be on the warmer side things though, its one of the warmest lights i have..

I just happened to be looking at 4x7's page about the P1D CE Q5. I have a P1CE and had a L0D CE whose interface is similar to the P1D. It had more modes than I really wanted but is fairly tolerable, while I don't like the P3D interface at all. I am sort of thinking of buying a P1D because its max level is about 2x as bright as my P1CE, but I'd prefer just two levels like the Surefire E1B (high then low), or even (sacrilige) high-low-strobe. The same thing with the L0D and LD10, they got the levels in the wrong order. Anyway the P1D really seems to be the best of the 123a-powered fenixes. Nice thread.

Just an update on the "Low" setting of the P1D CE Q5. I have used it around the house a few times now (Looking for a black cat at midnight, really!) and it is not really what I would call "low". In fact I did a side by side comparison with a 2C incan and it was about the same. My understanding is that as they have put in more efficient emitters they have kept the drive currents the same. Thus the "low" is several times brighter than the original low was.

It is nice to know that I could run it at that rather bright "low" setting all night long and still have battery to spare.

Been meaning to ask. It seems like Fenix is discontinuing the P1D. If so then what is the replacement? I don't see anything in the same size.

Mine has a nice warm color for a Q5.

I had to disassemble mine to clean all the brown soldering flux off the emitter (see below). It's much brighter now.

My P1D Q5 displaced my brass FireFly II in my pocket as soon as it arrived. It also changed my signature line. The interface is just right for what I want, and if you don't think the turbo mode is much brighter, try it outside when you are having trouble seeing something at a distance with the medium output.

I run mine on AW's LiFePO cells, the ones that may pop but will not burn like LiOn cells. I get all modes, since the working voltage is a little lower than LiOn's. I charge them from a solar setup, so I get sunlight when I turn it on and no guilt. Mine saved the day (night) when the lights went out at a civic meeting and I was able to light up the whole room in candle mode well enough for us to count hands to take a vote and finish our business. Can't see any marks on the finish after nearly a year in my pocket. It's a great light.

But of course I am on CPF tonight looking for the next one . . .
