Been reading here for a long time, trying to figure out how I can upgrade my current gaggle of low-end surefire lights without upgrading to the next level of 300+/- dollar lights. I read about the dealextreme cree "dropins" and how people have had varying success with them, but none have seemed to work right with the g2. Well, I have four g2's, one for car, one nightstand, one computer desk/garage one and one for work, I'm a mechanic and I use my g2 every 10 minutes all day every day. I love it, nobody in the garage has a better light and most paid well over 2x what I did for mine. I figured for $12.50 it was worth the gamble. I also have a 9p which I was pretty sure it'd fit in. I liked that it was 3-9v so I could use it in either. I accidentally grabbed a brand new p61 and put it in the 9v and blammo, 25 bucks down the crapper :(

So anyways, I ordered a set of four which apparently ships out of hongkong. Showed up within a week to my delight. Terrible packaging durability but they all survived. Put the first one in my g2, no luck. I was expecting the gap, I can fill that with an o-ring no problem, but no light. I tried em all, no luck. Put one in my 9p and found another spare battery and voila, omg this thing is bright. Pure white light too, I thought the surefire bulbs were pretty white til I saw this thing. It's like HID's on my car. Of course I had to flash myself to get the full effect. Broad daylight, 45 minutes later and I'm still seeing circles. Lol, dumbass.

So I started searching around to find the miracle cure online to make em fit the g2, with little success. One thing I read said the guy had to remove the outer spring to make it fit so I tried that. No light. I went to put it back on the bulb and noticed there's a big and a small end. Apparently it was shipped with the big end out, I tried it big end in (basically flipping the big spring end to end), and bingo, works like a charm. Tried em all 4 that way and they all work in all my g2's. Super bright too, just slightly more dim side by side compared to the 9p but again super white light.

Overall I'm impressed, if these things last as long as it sounds like they do on a set of batts they're worth 5x more than what I paid. I'm off to place another order to share with my g2 toting friends. One happy camper, woot. Now if I can just get my vision back before dark when the real fun begins. :D Thanks cpf doods, happy I found a new place to call home.

edit: this may all be common knowledge, haha, fng here. But I figured it was worth putting up incase somebody else wants to find it in the future, since I had such a hard time finding the info. ;)

Howdy mr.squatch, and welcome to CPF. It IS a good place to call home!

Thanks for the very informative post about your experience with the DealExtreme Cree drop-ins for your G2 lights. I'm very encouraged by all the positive things I keep hearing about these. Sounds like quite a deal for $12.50. I'm glad it's worked out so well for you.

I grew up in Bartlesville, so it's always nice to see somebody from my home state on CPF. Enjoy your time here, but DO hang on to your wallet, there are lots of neat gizmos floating around. :)

Wellcome Mr Squatch.

if youre the one from [FJ], youll probably like it here too.

I'd like to know more about the Cree drop-ins for the G2. What are the problems and how are they solved? I love the G2, but I don't want to keep using incandescents in it. Spare heads cost $17.

Cheers.

Only problem I can see is that the bulb assembly is slightly longer (about 1/8") than the p60 bulb. This leaves a slight gap between the light body and the cap. I have no problem with it, the gap is a place for dirt to get in, but the factory waterproofing o-ring is still in there doing its job so it won't affect the working of the light. If one was so inclined he could put the front end of the bulb assembly on a grinder or sandpaper and machine off the forward-most 1/8". that section of the bulb is straight cylindrical, not down to the cone yet, so you wouldn't lose any of the outer diameter or reflector area. I dunno if that makes any sense. If you cut it down in the area that's tapered it'd make the overall diameter of the light smaller than the housing it fits into, so it'd move back and forth. the last 1/8" of the assembly is the same diameter, like a cylinder. Anyways, I have a box of o-rings that I'm sure one will fit in the gap perfectly so I won't probably worry about it. It dropped right into the 9p no modification at all. Other than the length, I just swapped ends on the outer spring and it works. It's dark here now and I can tell you both these lights are OMG bright. There's a big halo that floods the whole room thats not too bright but the center mass of the shine is super white and bright. I dunno how to measure the difference but to the naked eye it's about 3x or more brighter than the p60 bulb. I have a p91 I compared the new g2 to and it's way brighter than that too. So I'd guess its somewhere between 150 and 200 lumens comparing to the published surefire numbers on the 9p. And that's out of the G2, its even brighter in the 9p. Woot I'm happy about my investment. I'm also about to order more.

Hi Mr Squatch, welcome to CPF. Glad to hear that you like the DX's drop-in. Its cheap and cheerful isn't it! I have one and currently in my SF M2. Previously I had the Litemania's V2 Drop in, but when I got the Dx's, they are brighter so I shelved the earlier one.
Are you running rechargeables? That's the way to go for guilt free lumens. As you use your lights often, its much much cheaper in the long run. There is a dealer right here in the CPFmarketplace under the name of AW.

Thanks, I'll check into that for sure. I have a pretty good battery hookup, I get cr123's for 99 cents a Pair :D I change out batts about once a month using it every day so it's not too bad for me. I can imagine if I were running 3-5 dollar batts it'd be a lot worse. But with as many surefires as I have accumulated I'm sure I really should look into some rechargeables. I think I read somewhere one of the benefits of these cree bulbs is they are regulated so they run the same brightness all the way down to zero, is that right? Off to play with my new lights in the dark. I'll check into it tomorrow. ;)

Greetings, Mr. Sq.

Good review. This may have been common knowledge to some CPFers, but there's so much new info bombarding us that many, like me, are way behind.

The G2 is one of my faves and that drop in should keep it up to date.

Have fun here!
