Hi all,

I just wanted to post some pics of my recent build. It is a red 4D mag. It is using an unknown 100W bulb and 2 of Kai's 7.2V lith packs. It also uses jimmyMs soft starter. But the thing that seperates this from other mags i have seen so far is the additional secondary turn-key switch. This key switch has to be turned on before you can use the normal mag switch to turn on the light.
My inspiration for this was the original Torch? the light with the safety pin lock that wont allow the light to be accidentally turned on. The key switch also serves the same purpose as well as not allowing unwanted people to use it when your not around.
I might make another post in the modified section as how i build it if their is enough interest.
I hope this pics are the right size, dont want to get a moderator offside.

I think it was the USL that had the pin.

Cool mod. I've only seen a few modded lights that requite a key to turn on.

Now where are the beamshots?:poke:

usually a stop pin method is utilized for added protection without introducing more resistance into the circuit

nice job btw:thumbsup:

Beam shots will be coming, although its not much of a beam. This bulb is very floody, sorta overkill if you are using it just to have a quick look at something.

There should not be more resistance as its using the jimmyM soft-starter which by-passes the main current away from the 2 switches.

Please share with us your building technique! (Incidentally, where did you get the key switch? Thanks!)

Please, please, please tell us who makes the switch and model number. I am getting ready to make a high powered incan and NEED that switch on it for safety.....

A picture of the tail cap would be nice if you can post one. Love to see how you did it.

I think turnkey switches can be bought in places like radioshack and its held in place by a hex nut like conventional toggle switches

this is definitely an elegant solution for safety. Generally what I do is remove the tailcap spring and store it separately from the rest of the light. This doesn't require any disassembly though.

I'd have to see how that tail switch is wired, but I think all the current is passing through the key switch. The JM-SST is only bypassing the mag switch. What is the current rating on that switch? It had better be >8 amps or you're looking for a meltdown.

You'd be surprised - in this sheltered country of ours a maglite is at the forefront of technology & innovation and costs about $60 - $100 depending on where you buy from. My 5D got stolen at a camp and then it was almost used on me when I tried to recover it, then my 6D got stolen when I was moving house.

yeah, but whos gonna steal a maglight?:D

I paid about that much for my 2D ROP mag light build.
Funny thing is - most people who have seen the beam think thats what a normal mag puts out - Even though it is brighter than my car headlights on low beam...
I think this is a good idea - keep unwanted/undesired use of the light...

Nice turnkey mod, littlejohnie.

Ra's Maxablaster has a similar system. I like the idea of these key switches. I don't like having to yank the connector off of my Thor when transporting it.

Many people I've shown it to think that too... unless/until they put their hand in front of the beam and say "holy crap that's hot!" :)

The time in which people are most impressed is when they are themselves carrying a 3D maglite, and I pull a 2C maglite out of my jacket with an ROP-Hi installed and blow their out of the water.

Yeah most people say "those maglites are so bright aren't they - and look at the nice round beam" when I fire up a hotwire.
Makes me want to kill them, not hurt them, kill them.
My mother said that about my mag85 once, only once

mmm, why hasn't anyone taken my 6D yet? once I actually purposely left it out and no one touched it:ohgeez:

and they say a normal mag with fresh batteries need new batteries when they see it...:ohgeez:

that really happend to me!
it was when I was in a camping with some friends...one of them was very happy of his father mag3D and was showing it to all others :ironic:
so I took my mag85 from my bag and:
me : SEEMS we have the same light...
him :yes! they are really bright...aren't they?!:ohgeez:
me :yeah! (and I turned my light on...):green:
him : mmmh yours is A BIT brighter...maybe I need to change batteries...:sick2:

anyway I really like your "turn-key mag"!
I hate when someone take my lights and blind me with 'em!:scowl:
