Ok I know thats more dangrous that a 2nd Lt with a map but here is my Idea.

I found this old light

Metal reflector, Glass Lens and huge battery compartment.

I would love to make this into a high power sleeper and wow my friends. Problem is I never did a flashlight mod what would be simple but still pretty cool.

i think that this needs to be in the homemade and modded section...

still i think it has an huge potential.
(im new to modding to but i can give you some hints)

use aa to d cell converters they alow you to use 3 or 4 high amperage aa recargable batteries and switch bulbs for something brighter and that can handle the juice.

im sure someone else can give more info/link for this

What kind of bulb does it use and is the bulb holder plastic?

The wire to the lamp might have to be changed to something with less resistance.

It should be possible to make this light really SHINE.

Should be manageable, I dont see anything dangerous at all. Its ALL metal/glass so you dont have to worry about thermal requirements that much. I dont see rust or corrosion, which is amazing in and of itself. Still though you might want to clean it up real good with some metal polish.

Biggest questions are the switch and electrical wiring... what their condition is. Those ray-o-vac type switches are supposed to be very reliable, assuming it hasn't been abused or exposed to moisture. My old Fulton GI has a similar switch and its going strong.

I'd replace the wiring, just to play it safe. Heck you could exceed its current capacity (depending on what kind of mod you have in mind) and turn it into a fuse...LOL.

I think that red would look better in OD... IMHO.

Yeah, with the right adapters you could (probably) fit 16 AA NiMH batteries in there... that's 19.2 volts. Not much you can't do with that much electricity, haha!

I would upgrade the switch. I'd figure out what bulb I wanted and the voltage and amperge it would see. Then multiply the amperage by 3 or 4 and install a switch rated for that load, because the switch will see 3 to 4 times its running load on startup.

With a high-power mod, you might turn it on and weld the switch in the closed (on) position. That would be bad.

Great potential here. I have a similar light but the internal resistance through the body is incredible. You should check out how that might impact your planning.

Welcome to CPF.
Great old light.....What about that thing on the rear end of the handle? Is that a red tail light? If so you could do all sorts of things with it from a high powered red strobe to a low powered night vision light to infra red and so on. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!
PS. You know that the only thing worse than a 2Lt with a map is a 2Lt with a map and a platoon.

You could do it the other way around. Figure out how many NiMH sub c cells you can jam into the compartment and then pick a suitable bulb for the voltage range:devil:... then pray it doesn't have a meltdown...

The ROP bulb can only run up to 8.6v max.

I'd suggest checking this thread to find a suitable bulb.

I just need to bud in here as there is a lot of mis-interpretation of LuxLuthors destructive testing.

Remember, it flashed at ~8.6V in a condition of being steadily ramped UP TO 8.6V. What this means is that, from a cold start, the premature failure point of the bulb is below 8.6V by probably a few tenths. The maximum voltage you would ever want to run the bulb at if you wanted bulb life that lasts longer than the battery life on the first charge is generally going to be ~10% lower than that flash point voltage.
