Hello all, i have a 3d mag that i want to mod. i want to put a ssc p4 in it with a heatsink found at 4sevens (you know, the green one that everyone seems to have). Question is what circuit do i need to purchase if i want to run it at 1amp (full lumen/power)? i would like the light to have the same brightness from beginning of the run to the end of the run (regulation). do i need boost or can i do without it?
Also, how long do you think it would run in regulation? thanks for the answers and excuse me if this has been answered before.

No way Kev! Your also in Redding CA! Your the only CPF'er I've seen in Redding. I live near Walmart where are you?

I modded my 3D MagLED with an SSC P4. All I did was take off the luxeon emitter, and then shoved a couple copper pieces in the + and - sides of the MagLED and it worked great.

www.dealextreme.com There are quite a few drivers there. Something like this would work... If your running it off D cells it will last a very long time... 10 hours or so. I run mine off AA's because I don't have D cells... I use eneloops with D adaptors.

If your going to go with a driver, and custom heatsink you might as well go all out and go with an SSC P7. It's the same thing basically as 4, SSC P4's in one. That would be my advice. Just skip the SSC P4, and go with the P7.

from my understanding, the p7 would require much more current which would then decrease my runtime considerably. plus i want to run the mag on alkalines not to mention that i would like more throw than flood. i figure that if i can get my 3d mag to throw like my tk11 and run at least 5hours regulated before dropping out, ill be happy.

I don't know if it will throw quite as good as your TK11, but I think it will be close. Here's a runtime graph of a 3D maglite with one of Gene's drop-ins. About 3/4 down the page, there's a runtime graph of that drop-in in a 3D maglite running on alkalines. That should give you an idea of what kind of performance you see with a seoul P4 running at an 1A. You won't get perfectly flat output for 5 hours, but you can get flatter output with rechargables.

i thought that i could get a higher lux with the mag ssc p4 (same as malkoff drop in) over the tk11 which would equate to farther throw. the maglite, to me, seemed like it would be perfect for the job being that it has a larger reflector and virtually the same LED as the tk11 Q5. am i wrong for thinking that?

Thats why you get a multi-mode driver. I have a P7 light with one, and at 20% brightness its about the same as my 3D Mag P4 SSC U-bin.

P7's are typically driven between 2amps and 2.8amps.

Regardless of what you use, I'd highly recommend using D Nimh cells. With 3x 10AH cells your looking at 12hrs runtime (with SSC P4 @ 1amp) and more stable output.
