Curious... are there any lights that use Nichia 5mm neutral/warm tint LEDs? I can't think of any. Seems like it would be a nice alternative to the angry blues.

I don't even know if Nichia makes any other LEDs than the angry blue ones.

I know of a Germany based company who sells REAL warm white 5mm LEDs (the best matching incan-color I have ever seen), I modded my SF A2 Aviator with it. The incan and the LEDs have EXACTLY the same color :twothumbs

For a picture of the burning A2 with the LEDs on, see the "flashlight collecting" section: "show your Surefires" or something like that.

As a bonus, you DON'T have to sand the LEDs, they have a very good beam. They just form a good, round, spotless "hot spot". Compared to the really quite bad beam of the stock ones, this is an enormous plus!

i have not seen one, i have few cree 5mm leds but they are a but less blue than chinese 5mm leds, brighter thou, and will keep brightness longer.
i have seen 5mm warm led on e bay, chinese ones, they aren't as good quality as cree or nichia, but if driven at no more than 20ma will be ok for flashlight, for something that is on 24\7 they might not be that good overtime, but flashlight, limited draw, limited time, might just be ok.

I guess the market drive for really good 5mm LED's just isn't there. Tint and optically I mean, efficiency is there.
:(
It's a shame too, we could use them even if nobody else would care.

I'd love to have an EO1 with a neutral or warm tint. Peak has neutral 5mm lights don't they?

As stated, the newer Cree cool whites are decent without the strong angry blue center. They use a rectangular die as does the Nichia GS.

Nichia warm whites would be interesting to test. I'm not sure of the availability in certain countries like the US. CPF member "milkyspit" may be able to get them for you but you have to purchase in large qtys such as 100 pcs bags.

The Radio Shack LED 276-0017 is the best neutral/warm LEDs I have seen. At 5000 hrs driven at 30ma, it is at 100% of initial brightness (this is at 5ma overdrive). It's color is not that **** yellowish color you get with some warmer LEDs, it is more natural. The only problem is that it would require a lens for a tight beam as it has a 30 Degree beam. As with other warmer LEDs, it is not as bright as the cooler ones.

Perhaps the RS LED is by the same German company 325addict speaks of. At any rate, I would love to find the source for those RS LEDs so I don't have to pay the RS price of $1 each.

I test LEDs and would be appreciative of anyone who can send me 5mm or similar LEDs for long term testing. Please see my LED fade tests in this forum.

This is a beamshot I did that represents the tint of my RS 276-0017 reasonably well IMO:

Edit: The central hotspot is because the LED is mounted in a P60 reflector (from this thread), not a beam characteristic of the LED package itself.

Would you give us the contact information for obtaining these? It may have been posted at another time, but I couldn't find it.

Thanks...

Looks good Kestrel

One trick I do to get more light into the reflector is to file the dome down to a couple mm over the die and carefully shape the outer edges to make a low dome LED. Polish with Novus 2 plastic polish or a car paste wax to bring the LED epoxy back clear. I've done this with the GS and the RS LED and it makes a throwier light.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't thought of that and it's a good idea. However, it's a light that I seldom use anyway and the dim flood is great for close quarters i.e. indoor use w/ night adapted vision.
Here's another shot of the beam pattern BTW, pretty decent tint for a 5mm IMO.

I had some samples of warm 5mm nichia about a year ago or so. The tint was nice but it still had a blue center

Really glad I found this thread. Stopping by RS later tonight to pick up some of those 276-0017 for modding. Will post results later next week.

In the meanwhile, anyone else have any experiences with other neutral/warm 5mm whites they'd like to share?

Cheers,
Tim

The Nichia NSPL500DS has a nice warm tint (in my opinion).
