Old Issue Flashlight : Reborn?

These were issued about 10+ years ago for the department. Plastic body. Incadesent bulb which is housed in the reflector. 5 D-cells. Momentary and on/off thumb switch. I have access to a handful of them easily for spare parts, etc.

What can be dropped in? How do I go about tweaking this bad boy? :thinking:


I have a SF G2 with CREE drop-in, rechargable on my belt. Works well. I am looking for a light to carry in the car for searches, special occassions. I would prefer mega-output to match the size of this thing however the plastic body negates any heat-sinking.

I reckon we're talking 30 years ago, to be precise...

Come with me on a journey. I'm going to take you back to 1977, before Krypton bulbs, before Super Heavy Duty, before alkaline cells or NiCD were affordable. And when LEDs output 3mCd.

Standard Duty and Heavy Duty batteries, and vacuum/argon bulbs were all there was.

When I was a schoolboy in the mid-to-late 70s, exactly this torch (plastic 5D) was where you got off the bus for outright brightness.

Why? Because with fresh heavy duty cells (), the 62-lumen 7.2V PR18 bulb could be used to advantage, and as the cells aged, the 38-lumen 6V PR12 bulb could be overdriven nicely.

Until the development of krypton bulbs (and later halogen, xenon, etc), the PR18 was the absolute brightest bulb that would fit in a torch.

And the plastic 5D was king of the schoolboy hill.

(Of course, there was always some kid with rich parents who carried a Big Jim, but that somehow didn't count. In my culture, if it's not affordable, it's somehow irrelevant. Which kind of explains why really expensive, high end torches don't interest me one scrap.)
