Are they any good for upgrading?
They have a larger tube and the switch looks quite robust. Another thing is the switch is completely serviseable and may have less resistance than the newer model.

What model do you have? Some mods require very little to be changed and it wouldn't matter much if you were using an old version. If it is a 2D then set it up as a ROP low (3854 low output bulb).

Have you tried fitting a 4 cell cluster of Eneloops into the tube?
If you can get 12 AA NiMH cells into a 3D it would make a nice host for a lot of 12 volt bulbs.

I don't have a 4 cell carrier to try but a D cell is quite loose. The tube is larger than the new model I have and the bore measures 1.4" = 35mm.

The old ones have a far more robust switch. Just shove 4 alkalines side by side into it and see if it fits.

I had a rare old blue maglite I used as a loaner light at work.

The last guy I loaned it to "lost" it and varies from telling me he left it in the office to he thinks its in his messy house somewhere. Sigh, never loan out a light with sentimental value.

I also was wanting to see if it was the old style.

4ea. AA alkalines fit in the old light with room to spare. They will also fit in the new model but much closer. No room left for a carrier.

I'll trade you a brand new in the package new model for yours  lol

j/k, I would do the rop low like others have suggested, that way you're taking it easy on the switch. they may be a little harder to find than the newer ones.

The ones I have are the 3D and 4D. They would have to be shortened for a 2D project. The 4D is black and in very good shape. The 3D is well used but in good working order. I just took it apart, cleaned and lubed the O-rings. I also cleaned and conditioned the switch with ProGold. This light gets used by several folks at work.

stuff that 3d with 12aa's in one of fivemegas black 7.2 volt battery carriers. should fit very easily with eneloops in it with zero modifications to the light and some great runtime with the rop lo bulb.
