I was at department store during my lunch break and walked through lightning section. I found a couple of those energy saving Osram IRC bulbs hanging there, they had 64432 ES 35W and 64429 ES 25W for 4.90€ (~7.5USD). I picked up one of the 35W bulbs to see if I can build something with it.

Do you think that this would work:

5D m@g
15AA to 5D mdocod adapter
15 eneloops
kiu socket
switch and taicap resistance fixes

How is the beam like in m@g sized reflector? I have some cheap chinese SMO and MOP reflectors and glass lenses.

Any thoughts?

I remember seeing those beamshots, very inspirational...

Interesting thing... I have a package of 64432, but the bulb inside is stamped 64429 25W. I'll have to go back tomorrow to exchange, I want all my watts!

I'm running the 65W in a 3D with 4 of AW's C cells and fivemega's 3" head. The reflector is smooth and the beam is absolutely beautiful. No artifacts to speak of. Maybe due to the filament which is aligned vertically.
According to LuxLuthor's destructive bulb test (http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/pike444/bulbs/64432-IRC-35W.jpg) the 35 watt won't flash until about 23.7 volts. With your setup at 18 volts the bulb runs at about 132 degrees F. I don't have experience with the stock mag reflector at that temp.

It seems that these bulbs can take a lot of overdrive. Should I go for more than 15 AA:s? I don't need that much bulblife, few hours would be ok, but I don't want to instaflash on fresh cells either. And mdocod is out of 15AA adapters now...
