REPOST AS FIRST WENT TO THE OLD PAGE ERROR MALARKEY
also just checking to see if it did post I notice somebody posted a siliar query about this earlier - but I'd already found this one on a japanese site.

My first post, be gentle.

I just found this and was rather a gasp - a new P7 modded into a V4 body, is he insane? Running off a single 123!

Thought the V4 has plastic lens and reflector, wouldn't it melt.

Likewise that MTE P7 on DX says it has plastic reflector, which sounds risky.

it's in japanese mind. Anybody out there translate better than google?

There is also a review of the MTE P7.

Leaves me a bit stuck. What with all these new emitters (R2 & P7) it's making my imminent purchase of a Romisen F4 look like not a clever move.

I was going to get another G2 :))) for somebody who doesn't want foward clicky, so was planning to swap it into the F4 for myself.

Which leads to question can the G2 switch handle the higher current of lith cells in the F4? Also will the F4 out throw the G2? I only ask becasue I saw a review suggesting it doesn't, but can't see how as almost identical head but with P4 and lith power - CPF says 3400 @1m afterall.

The F4 has big following and is v pocketable. Mini Cree is more expensive and uses just 1 cell, but not regulated and not as svelt as F4, though has the low mode which is sensible. Also Rom's do seem to be finished v well, they just feel like they should be costing 3 times as much.:)

Would getting a P60 (T1,502,TRC@,etc) be more sensible solution to allow for a drop in of an R2 or above later?

Seen that G2 Q5 @ shiningbeam, but test here on CPF doesn't rate it that much higher than the G2 stock (1350 vs 1250 lux), obviously better spill and wonderfully simple single AA. But it's over 20 bucks and don't think it is availalbe to us lesser mortals outside the US. [certainly time now for Rom to put something better inat the factory coz all lower bins will now be relegated - Q2 perhaps or an R2 for sub 20 bucks - coz P2's do cost something after all]

for 14.60 deilvered that F4 looks pretty good for some crowd pleasing out of the pocket action. Esp when I think of the numbers of surefires mates have owned...and lost.

***** ALSO RANS FOR GP USE ****
I had also considered the slightly larger formats above p60 as well for a general purpose household light .The Rom U4 will take AAA's (of which I have loads) for household use but can load it up with a lith cell when I go do something adventurous. Looks like a F4 on steroids - same P4, sensible batt option and real big head, only 20 bucks delivered - yet I've never seen anyone review it, I wonder why.

I was also toying with idea going up the scale further, get a WF500 type light, which I know will take future dropins. Problem there is the immediate requirement to get bats & chargers too to support it. Bit beyond my needs right now as an urbanite.

What do you mad crazy light folks think? Get the F4, something else or wait a month or so:banghead::hairpull:

and boy oh boy that P7 is simply bonkers. Wonder if FoxFury will put 9 of them in one of their CREE heads? Or perhaps in just a the 4 Ostam version.

yeah already seen them, obviously they're just starting to come on stream as products. It was the KD thing that got me looking around, if I wanted a hardocre light that would prob be it, but still best to wait for a few more to appear first, possibly worth the 3x price tag of other things like the C2/U2 clones.

Not interested in them just yet as too big, too hot, too expensive.

Personally looking for a fun EDC, just was getting some more G2's for other folks and saw this mental P7 in a tiny body.

Has the F4 become "over the hill"?

Here's a new P7 on DX

no not that one this one

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12271

pretty much knocks WF500 class ideas on the head, P7 is definitely the way to go for a general purpose light, for now anyways.

but it won't fit in your pocket

Woah! Steady on there tiger...

The driver being used is 3W!! It tops out at 1.2a absolute max, thats under half of the standard drive current for a P7.

As is proved by the the comparison shot, did you even look at it? The P7 is being out shone by a standard driven cree P4 in a SmartFire M-504C!! Seems like a totally crap mod to me.

thought it said 2 Amps at the bottom, talks about tripping protected cells

but as I said I was pretty agast as the thing seemed pretty nuts coz the P7 wants lots of juice

It probably does try and pull 2A off the battery as being pushed that hard its going to be horrifically inefficient.

Simple fact is that driver will supply no where near 2.8a directly to the led. StefanFS has stated a few times that this driver will supply about 1.2a max to the actual led. And say if efficiceny got as low as 60% ( quite possible, the driver gets very hot at high current) given it's 2 amp off the battery....I'll let you do the math.

and hang on a second, the Smartfire is a huge 4 C Cell torch, whilst the V4 is just a but big for a keychain light.

hardly an honest fight there

Don't be silly, think about what you just said a little.

The smartfire drives at a standard current and voltage, stuff all the batteries in the world into the back of it and its not going to change its brightness....it would run for awhile mind you.

The driver that's used is stable up to around 1.2-1.3A and around 4 Volt (the ones I have tested at least). It's possible to push it further but it will self destruct somewhere slightly north of 1.5-1.6A. I have destroyed two, one burned at ~1.8A and the other at ~1.9A. They get glowing hot and start producing strange high pitched sounds. Someone said the rectifier diode and some other components really doesn't work well with current much higher than around ~1A. But the SSC P7 is very bright even at a lower current.

more leaway for fiddling about though in a big format 504

Hey I'm a newb to this light marlakey, so not trying to start something, just saw it and thought you'd guys be interested

more japanese P7 action over at this jap blog,

B bin from DX tested alongside P4's etc, I had it earlier but this site wasn't repsonding so not sure what's going on there.

And what about the F4?

Will the G2/F4 switch over trick likely work? I'm sure there are folks here who've already been down that road.

Something hot for the pocket while I wait for a for more p7 options come out, a C2 format or that C8 on DX today/yesterday looks like the one for a great all rounder light, flood (look at those shots vs 128LED in posting below: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=195630) and throw. Just make sure there is a low mode and you've got it made. 40-50 bucks seems quite reasonable.

Some of us out here are 1. just starting out (I have only 4 or 5 light types inc trusty minimags & conversions) and 2. are not in the market for Polarian, Maxbeam, etc or other moon scorchers, though love to see some of this great work on hotwires, etc
