gregw,
Effectively, the PR-T and Aleph 1 are the same in terms of beam shape and output. The Aleph 1 does have a new reflector which seems to be brighter than the original PR reflectors so one might measure a higher lux on a meter. I did one bench test comparing a PR reflector with the McR-27 and the IMS 27 mm reflector. Judging by the highest recorded reading in this test of only one sample of each, the McR-27 came out on top with the IMS 27 next and then the PR. The total spread was around 20% with the IMS right betwen the two. My test was too crude and with just a single sample of each, highly suspect! Of course one can always replace the PR reflector with one of the McR-27's and this potential difference goes away.
The PR-T has an integral heat sink/ bulkhead (advantage).
The Aleph 1 has a removeable LE (advantage).
The Aleph 1 has a soda lime glass window with double sided AR coating (advantage).
The Aleph 1 has what I consider to be an improved window seal with the O-ring seating on an internal shoulder in the bore and the window compresed against it via a threaded bezel ring.
All told, I believe the Aleph 1 is an improvement on the PR and PR-T's but by incremental amounts. In actual use, one would be hard pressed to identify one over the other.
Beamshots would be like looking at twins! Lux measurements would be more telling but only applicable to the two packages tested and subject to the vaguries of finding the highest readings with moving the light meter around in the beam. I believe the McR-27 would prevail in most if not all cases but by how much?!?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif Although the differences might well be measurable and consistant, beyond bragging rights by numbers, in actual use and visual comparisons /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif .
EDIT: Just in from the marketing department: The new Aleph 1 has vast improvements over the PR and PR-T heads. The release of the Aleph 1 has rendered these earlier heads obsolete and any self respecting flashaholic would immediately stick their PR and PR-T heads on the shelf to make way for the new Aleph 1!!
Note: after receiving this information, the marketing department was given a carrot and instructed to hop away. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nana.gif
