whether u believe it or not i have found PT apex's w/ red ultrabrights (the 4 flood leds) right out of the box! thats right warranty still intact!!!

i remember reading that several of you cpf'ers have wanted such a feature (without opening the light yourselves), i was wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing them?

i'll admit i honestly don't have any interest in running around and helping people out of the "goodness" of my heart, and the whole reason for me posting this was that i saw an opportunity to make a little profit (don't know if anyone else has access to these, if they are out all over the place already i guess i look pretty stupid), and i figured even the custom modders are trying to make a buck...

well anyway this is just to see if anyone was even interested, i have never sold anything online (ebay, paypall, etc) and don't even really know where to start. If no one is interested it's all moot anyway, but i just thought i'd ask.

the retail for me where i live is $85. you guys tell me a fair price, oh and don't forget shipping costs.

i know their will probably be a whole bunch of doubters thinking i'm a scam or something, you tell me what you want me to do to prove it. like i said if people are willing to buy and it's worth my time to run around, i'll do it.

Well first I'd say...

Sounds interesting but this thread likely won't live too long if you intend it to be a feeler or sales thread. Post pics of it here and talk about it but take the sales to the marketplace. Put up a WTS in the flashlight sell section. :)

Is it the apex with a cree?

first off WOW that was quick!
i don't have pics because i haven't purchased it, don't want to purchase it if no one is even interested' or if they can get it themselves. i honestly don't have the money to purchase another expensive headlamp for no reason. i mean basically you can imagine the four side led's they light up red, and it comes that way right out of the box. if you'd pay extra for that your interested if you wouldn't then your not.

Could you please help by suggesting a price if you know about such things. honestly i'm just a "window shopping" flashaholic. like to look and dream, but unless i win the lotto i probably would never drop several hundred on a custom light, let alone try and make one myself.

Again if you can suggest a price, and the price (x) the amount of people interested=enough $ then i would be willing to purchasing another light for pictures and such.

I've never heard of this setup, but I could imagine quite a few people wanting one if it was in fact the new 130 lumen version. The only problem is that the Apex usually sells for quite a bit less than $85, and you're trying to add on some money on top of that for a profit. There is nothing wrong with that, but it makes the headlamp even more expensive compared the best prices online.
Maybe you could pick one up and post some pics on here. You can always take it back later.

I know the price is expensive but remember it's from a brick n motar store not the Internet. To make matters worse shipping to my location is expensive, so even for me to buy off the Internet take brightguy for example I think it's like 68$ or something like that, but I remember shipping added on like 12$ or something.

Well anyway it dosent seem like anyone would be interested anyway seeing as their are only 2 replys. Honestly I don't see myself going through the trouble of driving there and to the post office and figuring everything out for like 5$. I was thinking like 15-20$ per light unless someone wants a lot. Is this fair? How much would it be if you did it ur self?

I just thought it was cool that it came that way out of the box.

Well if anyone is interested just bump the thread with interested and if enough people are I guess I'll go pick one up.

I'd really be interested in one of these...do alot of night land navigation that only uses red light.

Just want to confirm here,
these are RED ultrabrights? Most headlights have the pissant little 5mms that do nothing for me.

Are these something is doing custom or are these coming from Princeton Tec like this? Went on their website and saw no mention of this....

Would be interested in one but need more data first...

hiking808 -Wow, very interesting! You posted this Apex (w/ 4x red leds?) is still at the store. Please tell us how you became aware that the 4 leds were red? Unclear in your post how you found out. Packaged they do not have batteries installed and the blister pack store display prevents casual opening.

Did you actually hold the Apex with red leds 'powered on' & glowing red? Or just hearsay from a sales guy?

Is this a demo unit, out of the package, for shoppers to play with and leave their greasy snot on? (bleh!)

Or did the store people let you open a new package, insert batteries and test it (thus your understandable surprise by seeing the red leds) ?

Do you remember if this Apex package said 'Red led's' on it or White leds? Were there other Apex's in stock with different packaging?

Curious what the name of the store is? Shouldn't keep that a secret from your CPF comrades!

Any theories how the red leds got into this HL? Some joker at the PT factory maybe?

fun fun! ...inquiring minds?

sorry haven't checked the thread, cuz i thought no one was interested.

i'm gonna call PT in a little to get some answers myself and i'll get back to you guys, sorry tried calling earlier but seems the whole office was away for the holidays.

i do have the story as to how they came about the custom Apex, but first let me just confirm it with PT

ok just called PT and heres what i got:

they are PT manufactured (warranty intact)
they are ultrabrights
both above straight from PTs customer support.

the light i looked at and turned on is a demo unit, i didn't ask to open a brand new box (not sure where your going with this one? don't think they will let me open a new box just to play around)
the store is called mccully bike. according to the sales person, now that PT is doing the manufacturing themselves they are allowing their distributors the option of certain customizations, so at a recent trade show or something like that they asked for some with red flood lighting, and since they sold out quick they got some more.

i didn't ask to see a package because at the time i wasn't planning to buy one.

once again they retail at the store for 85$ plus tax. i have no idea what shipping will be, and no offense to anyone but i am not looking to run around for like 10$ per light (i will break even after gas). i mean you probably will want to see one first and that means i have to buy one, so even if i add an extra 20 to each light i still gotta get at the very least 4 others interested b4 i even go out to buy the light for pictures. And honestly i don't even know if 20$ is a fair price, for all you modders how much would it cost people to do this themselves? if it cost an extra 20$ i would think you would just buy this one and at least have the warranty if anything goes wrong.

I think we can end this thread right here as this thread probably needs to be in the marketplace and not in the discussion forum.

McCully Bike is a well respected sporting goods store in Hawaii. Anyone not living in Hawaii who is interested in buying one of these would be well advised to give them a call and purchase one directly from them. An out of state mail order sale would not have to pay sales tax or HiKing808's large unspecified markup and the purchaser would be protected by their credit card company if the sale did not work out.

Thankyou very much Hiking808! Just bringing this Red Apex to CPF attention
earns you an atta-boy! No need for the resale runaround. Ordering a red version direct from PT may be the option for those interested.

I was musing about all kinds of red LED conspiracy theories...including product tampering by retail peeps! hah!
Thanks again!
The Red Apex lives.

My question is would it be possible to do this? I mean to order direct from PT? I thought bigger companies did not like to deal with end consumers usually...

it took a lot of begging from some select individuals to get PT to make them. hawaii fishermen are real sticklers when it comes to lights while fishing at night and wanted a bright headlamp with red LED's. from what i was told, PT made these headlamps specifically for McCully Bicycle & Sporting Goods. i'm no headlamp enthusiast but i do have my fair share. i bought a 2008 Myo XP and didn't believe it when i saw a friend with a PT Apex that was brighter than my new Myo XP that also had red LED's. i ended up buying two for myself (one for a spare). so without further ado:

the packaging mentions nothing about red LED's. btw, it is the 130 lumen version. the red LED's on my Apex don't shine round but i really could care less.

Sure it does, you see that sticker? ;) In all seriousness, it's already a ton of hassle to side-stream a bit of their product and make a new version for one particular retailer; I can only imagine what a pain it would be to also make matching packaging. They almost certainly contract out the printing, cutting, and folding of the packaging.

I'm actually fairly surprised to learn that they have the capability to side-stream some product and build it up to customer specs. I would have figured that they were just a design house and had everything manufactured in Korea or Taiwan or something.

well, the only thing that might identify it is a sticker UPC label from PT. it says "APXR-BKR" with a bar code. APXR-BK seems to be standard but the last "R" probably identifies the red ultrabrights. sorry, no pictures for the sticker UPC. the shop probably had to order a minimum amount for PT to meet their request. the box actually says "assembled in the USA".

It could be a test market...Some companies pick one or two cities and do test marketing of a product...if it does well it will be put out in large numbers...if not it vanishes.
