I think the PT Rage is a great little light - vastly underated!

Due to running on AAAs the runtime is not good, at around an hour, but it is one pocket-sized, insanely bright light.

At the top is says "Special Buy from REI-OUTLET.COM" I wonder if the store will sell them for the same price?

You can have them shipped to a local REI for free, and pick them up yourself...if you have a store nearby, that can be a great deal.

A nice little light in its day, but its total output and runtime are comparable to a Fenix L0D CE on high setting, and the Fenix runs on one AAA

does the rage use 4AAA in series or parallel or both? Does it use a PR bulb? How is it with the SMJLED drop in. This looks like it'd make a nice host for one.

4AAA's are in series and the bulb is -not- PR based.

The PT 20 (If you can still find one) makes an excellent host for the SMJLED bulb. Powered from 2AA's, tough as you like and very waterproof.

The Rage uses a minimag-like bi-pin bulb soldered into a reflector assembly, physically compatible with the 2aaa Blast but the voltage is higher. With some dexterity and a soldering iron you can replace the bulb but normal users just buy a new lamp/reflector assembly. PT also makes an LED module that's interchangeable with the Rage lamp assembly; it has three 5mm leds and a resistor. They sell a light called the Attitude which is the same as the Rage except it uses the LED module instead of the Rage's incan module (I dunno if they sell the led module separately). You can swap the modules around between the two lights; for example you could go camping and save weight by bringing one body and both modules. The Attitude module makes a nice soft flood beam and has about 8 hours of good brightness followed by 100+ hours of dim light that's enough to navigate by. The Attitude's leds (as of a couple years ago anyway) weren't the latest and most efficient but some people have pried the module open (it's heat-welded plastic) and replaced the leds with Nichia CS or whatever the latest best 5mm leds are.

These are all well-made lights and the Blast was one of my favorites for a long time, but I think these small incans are pretty much technologically obsolete now.
